This document specifies the Network Voice Protocol (NVP) for transmitting real-time voice over packet networks. It describes:
1. The control protocol for negotiating connections between callers and answerers, including messages for initiating calls, accepting or refusing calls, negotiating compatibility, terminating calls, and indicating call status.
2. The data protocol for transmitting compressed voice data over the established connections.
3. Examples of control message exchanges.
4. Appendices defining parameters for voice coding algorithms and implementation recommendations.
The goal is to enable high-quality, low-bandwidth, secure voice communication over computer networks in a way that is robust to packet loss and adapts to changing network conditions.
