IndiastotalexportsinJune,2013declined4.6percenttoUS$23,786million(Rs.138,902crore)
which was 4.56 per cent lower in US$ terms (0.53 per cent lower in Rupee terms) from
US$24,923million(Rs.139,645crore)duringJune,2012.Thus,cumulativevalueofexportsfor
theperiodAprilJune201314wasUS$72,456million(Rs.405,104crore)asagainstUS$73,492
million(Rs.397,884crore)registeringafallof1.41percentinUS$termsandincreaseofof1.81
percentinRupeetermsoverthesameperiodlastyear.
DEMANDFORFLEXIBLELABOURLAWS
The textiles ministry has made a case for amending labour laws to allow women to work at
night in apparel factories and provide overtime for workers to help make the sector globally
competitive. Accordingtothetextiles MinisterKSambasivaRao thesectorneedsflexibilityin
labour lawstoallowovertime. Sincetextiles sectoris seasonal, everybody hastoworkround
theclockduringaparticulartimeoftheyear.Thus,thereisaneedtoamendlegislationinthis
regardasabout45millionworkersareemployedinthesector.
At a recent HighLevel Committee on Manufacturing meet, chaired by Prime Minister
ManmohanSingh,aroadmapofmeasureswaslaidouttoincreasetextileexportsby30per
cent, one of the steps being taken by the government to counter the declining rupee. The
committeealsodiscussedwaystoboostthecountry'sexportstooverUS$44billionin201314
fromaboutUS$34billioninthelastfiscal.
India'sapparelexportsdeclinedby5percentin201213duetoweakdemandinmajormarkets
suchastheUSandEurope.Toreducedependenceonthesemarkets,exportersareexploring
newopportunitiesinLatinAmerica,AustraliaandJapan.
HOSIERYMAKERSWANTBANONCOTTONEXPORTS
TheSouthIndiaHosieryManufacturersAssociation(SIHMA)hasurgedthegovernmenttoban
exportofcottoninordertostabilizeyarnprices.ItalsowantsCottonCorporationofIndia(CCI)
tostopsellingcottononline.
AccordingtoSIHMAPresidentACEswaranthedemandarisesfromtherecentsharpriseinyarn
andcottonpricesandthebanwouldensuresufficientcottonavailabilityfordomesticmarket
fordomesticconsumptiontillstartofthenextcottonseasoninOctober.
CCI,SIHMAsaysshouldfacilitatedirectsaleofcottontodomesticbuyers,ratherthanindulging
inonlinecottonsales.Themovewouldensuresufficientavailabilityofcottontotextilemillsfor
yarnproduction,andwouldalsohelpinstabilizingtheyarnprices.Thedepreciationinvalueof
Indian rupee against US$ has ledtoa steeprise in cotton exports from the country inrecent
weeks,whichhasmadecottondearerinIndia.
SPUNYARNEXPORTSINJUNE
InJune2013,99millionkgsofspunyarnwasexportedvaluedatUS$341millionorRs1,925
crore.IntermsofYoYgrowth,volumeswereup22percentwhileUS$valueincreased7.5per
centreflectingtheflatofunitpricerealisationsincetheRupeedepreciated3.1percentagainst

theUS$inthecomparablemonths.OverallunitpricerealizationaveragedUS$3.48/kgwas,US
cents6lowerthantherealizationamonthagoandUScents3lowerthanlastyear.
Cottonyarnaccountedfor87percentoftheallspunyarnexportedfromIndiainJune,while
manmadefibreyarn,comprisingpolyester,viscoseandacrylicyarns,contributed5.7percent
andblendedspunyarnaccountedfortheremaining7.3percent.
In June, spun yarns were exported to 83 countries as against 86 in June 2012. But only two
countriesaccountedformorethan50percentofallspunyarnexportedfromIndia.Theywere
ChinaandBangladesh.
CottonyarnexportwasvaluedatUS$297million(Rs.1,675crore)implyingunitpricerealiza
tion of US$3.50 a kg on an average in June 2013. This was US cents 10 lower than previous
monthandUScents5downfrompreviousyearslevel.Combedcottonyarnexportwasat46
millionkgsaccountingfor61percentoftheallcottonyarnexportedduringthemonthinterms
ofvalue.Cardedyarnexportwasat27millionkgs.Theirrespectiveunitvaluerealizationwas
US$3.91perkgandUS$3.20perkg.Openendyarnexportwasat8.7millionkgs.Cottonyarn
wasexportedto72countriesinJune2013,ofwhich,ChinaandBangladeshtogetheraccounted
forcloseto60percentofIndiancottonyarnexportswithtotalvolumeat52millionkgsworth
US$172million.
Thefallinmanmadefibrespricesdidnothelpexportsoftheiryarnsinrecentmonths.Export
ofspunyarnsmadefrommanmadefibrescontinuedtodeclineinJune.Atotalof6.56million
kgsofmanmadefibrespunyarnswereexportedinduringthemonth,comprising2.68million
kgsofpolyesteryarn,1.78millionkgsofviscoseyarnand0.82millionkgsofacrylicyarn.About
1.28millionkgsofunspecifiedsyntheticyarnswerealsoexported.Polyesterspunyarnexport
wasvaluedatUS$7.39millionwithaunitpricerealizationofUS$2.76onanaverage.Polyester
spun yarn was exported to 42 countries with Turley topping the list. Viscose yarn export was
valuedatUS$6.03million,implyingaverageunitpricerealizationofUS$3.39perkg,UScent22
lowerthanlastyear.BelgiumcontinuedtobethehighestimporterofIndianviscoseyarnval
uedatUS$1.44millionfollowedbyIranwithimportsworthUS$1.30million.Around20coun
triesimportedviscoseyarnfromIndiainJune2013.Brazil,appearstohavestoppedimporting
viscosespunyarnfromIndia.Lastyear,ithadimportedviscosespunyarnworthUS$1.30mil
lion.Similarly,ArgentinaandPortugalalsoremainedonthesidelines.
InJune2013,blendedspunyarnsexportsaggregated7.62millionkgsvaluedatUS$25.16mil
lion.Theymainlycomprised3.83millionkgsofPCyarnsand2.87millionkgsofPVyarns.While
ColombiawasthelargestimporterofPCyarnfromIndiainJune2013,Turkeycontinuedtobe
thelargestimporterofIndianPVyarnsduringthemonth.Cotton/viscose,acrylic/cotton,poly
ester/wool and polyester/acrylic were the other major blended yarns exported from India in
June.
