METHODS TO PROMOTE HEALTH

EDUCATIONAL/

This definition of health states that to be truly healthy you have nothing wrong with you.

This is the Bio-Medical Approach where people only think about their health when they are actually ill or poorly, rather than maintaining their health constantly.
This is also referred to as a negative approach to health, because people are not actively focused until something goes wrong.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity 1946. Holistic Health considers the whole person and not just the physical self. Often described an alternative, there are many other ways to treat a person without having to consult medical practitioners or resort to chemical drugs to make a person feel better.

Positive health means a person takes care of themselves and actively tries to keep their body healthy by taking various actions e.g. Watching their weight Measuring health e.g. BMI Watching their lifestyle choices e.g. No to smoking and drinking/ moderation. Taking regular exercise Consulting the doctor for all types of concerns.

Model Role Play

We are going to split into 3 groups. Each group must produce a role play that will promote a health issue and use your given health model below. 1. Educational/Behaviou ral 2. Medical 3. Societal Plays to be displayed at 12.00
Example; Little girl sneezes all over. She thinks its funny and so continues doing it and touching everything she can. Grandma is chasing her with a tissue trying to catch her and they end up in a race. Mum comes along and tell little girl why is bad to sneeze everywhere (education) and she stops. Grandma then trips on one of girls bogies. The end!

Task You are going to be given a specific health related problem. Rather than cure it with a Biomedical approach, you are going to recommend a programme of Holistic care to make the whole person better. You are to produce one sheet of A4 to include the following; 1. Your own definition of holistic care 2. Your own definition of the problem. 3. Your recommended treatments for making the person better. 4. Justification about how they will work. You are to submit your work at 2.50. It will be photocopied and each person will receive a copy as a source of revision

Collect 3 examples of Health Promotion Material from magazines, Newspapers, doctors, public services etc and bring them into class on Monday. You will need these to be able to complete the lesson!!!

1- What approach is being used in each Health Promotion? 2- Who is the promotion aiming at? 3- What is the promotion encouraging the audience to do?

Sun Safety
Tanning has always been a popular when the sun comes out. A tan is seen in our culture as a fashion and the desire to look bronzed and healthy far outweighs the thought of it leading to skin cancer. The number of people diagnosed with skin cancer is increasing, with 110570 diagnosed in 2008.

TASK- Create a mini Health Promotion activity, alerting 17 year olds about the dangers of tanning by; Finding out why people think they need a tan Finding out the dangers of all types of tanning Create a list of side effects Suggest possible alternatives Present your findings to the rest of the group Work together in your table groups and divide the tasks between each other. PRESENT YOUR PROMOTION @ 12 NOON IN ANY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4jgUc METHOD OTHER THAN POWERPOINTS. BE IMAGINATIVE xMezM
