was one of Mary Shelleys finest works she had accomplished in her career. This novel inspired many films. Shelley was told to write a frightening story by Lord Byron; furthermore her husband encouraged her to write the novel. She spent almost a year in accomplishing it. Throughout the book, she used a various combination of literary devices in order to grab the readers attention and to continue on reading. In the novel Frankenstein, Shelley uses numerous counts of literary devices resembling foreshadowing, the tone of the character, and personification. Reading the novel Frankenstein, one can quickly perceive Shelleys over uses of foreshadowing. For example, in page 21 Victor states, No word, no expression could body forth the kind of relation in which she stood to me- my more than sister, since till death she was to be mine only. This quote is significant because it foreshadows that Elizabeth might become Victors wife. Provided by this information, the reader visualizes an image of what may occur in the prospect between Elizabeth and Victor. Also, when Victor was about to leave to the University of Ingolstadt, he said My departure was therefore fixed at an early date, but before the day resolved upon could arrive, the first misfortune of my life occurred- an omen, as it were, of my future misery (Shelley 28). Shelley is foreshadowing that Victor might have more than one misfortune in his life. Later on in the reading when Victor stated this, Elizabeth had caught

Ornelas 2 the scarlet fever which almost killed her; moreover, Victor might lose someone important afterward. Shelley provides this evidence to advise the reader what may occur in Victors future misery. Additionally, in page 63 Victor was articulating that last time he saw the monster and ideally said, Two years had now nearly elapsed since the night on which he first received life, and was this his first crime? The quote is foreshadowing that the monster might commit another crime. In this part of the novel, Shelley provides a foreshadowing of future deaths of Victors loved ones to grab the readers attention. Mary Shelley uses continuously this type of literary device to persuade the reader to read additionally to see the upcoming events. Another example, one can encounter the tone of a character through the novel. For instance, in page 30 Victor said, My life had hitherto been remarkably secluded and domestic, and this had given me invincible repugnance to new countenance. The tone of the character, Victor, was gloomy and lonely in this quote because the lack of friendship where he had moved. Victor was too timid to meet new friends; however, later in the reading Victors mood changed from being depressed to excited because he wanted to seek knowledge. This quote provided the reader to predict and visualize what Victors emotions and what hes going through. Another key point, when Victor back to his solitary apartment he said, I return home not disappointed, for I have said that I had long considered those authors useless who the professor reprobated( Shelley 31). Earlier in the novel Victor goes from a zenith to a nadir of the character tone. Victors professor, Mr. Krempe, told him that he had spent all of his time in something that was not true. The quote provides an excellent overturn of tone in Victor to make the reader have a sensation of what he is emotionally feeling. I called myself the murderer of William, of Justine, and of Clerval (Shelley 167). Victor blames himself of the murder of his loved ones because of

Ornelas 3 wanting to seek knowledge. The quote symbolizes Victors depression and gives the reader an idea of what he is going through to better understand of mood. Also, all thru Frankenstein Shelley uses personification to make the reader understand a point. To emphasize, in page 83 as Victor awoke from his sleep, he had a horrible nightmare, All of soul-inspirited fled with sleep, and dark melancholy clouded every thought. When Victor was asleep, his thought of seeking knowledge has overtaken him. His depression had blocked everything he had thought; furthermore, he was awaking by the rain that was pouring in the morning. The use of personification in this quote helps the reader explicitly understand and visualize Victors nightmare. Heaven forbid! Even if you were really criminal, for that can only drive you to desperation, and not instigate you to virtue (Shelley 123).Victor is spiritually telling heaven to forgive him from his past misdeeds. Due to the personification of heaven, Shelley illustrates a more understanding of Victors forgiveness and why he feels that way. On page 150 Victor says But the iron had eaten into my flesh, and I sank again, trembling and hopeless into my miserable self. Victor felt the gilt of the death of his loved ones was eating him from inside; in addition, he became more depressed. Shelley visually describes how his gilt is destroying to make the reader better comprehend his emotions. In summary, the novel Frankenstein is full of many literary devices that Mary Shelley used in order to attract the reader. One example of that is when she foreshadowed an event or catastrophe earlier in the book like when Victors sister was about to die but survived. Also, she used tone throughout the reading to describe a characters thoughts and mood. Finally Shelley also used personification to make the reader comprehend a point that is been mentioned. For further reference, one can catch more examples of literary devices throughout Frankenstein.
