~ Prepare rhythm flash cards to distribute to students.

~ Echo (teacher - class) each rhythm on cards.


Teaching Sequence:

~ Echo each rhythm before explaining anything. ~ After echoing each rhythm found on the flash cards at least once, write each rhythm on the board and clap through them one at a time. ~ Have students count off (up to 6, then back to 1) to divide them into groups. ~ Give each group their own corner/side of the classroom. ~ Explain task: "Compose 4 measures using the cards you were given. Your compositions Must contain at least 1 syncopated rhythm. Use the black card too add a custom rhythm if you'd like. Each group will have to perform their composition." ~ Give students 3-4 minutes to complete this. (If time permits, give them an extra minute or two) ~ Assess as students compose. Make sure it is a group effort. ~ Once time is up, form one large circle with each seperate group remaining together. ~ Regardless of chronology, go around the circle having each group perform their composition. (Note: Inbetween groups have one measure of count-in)

- Have groups rotate to the right and have them perform another groups composition. This can be done as many times as desired. - Combine all compositions into one long rhythm. Perform straight through. !
