Accessing the DHSHS Video Local Area Network for Visual Arts Instructor | Greg Andrade Lesson | Visual

Arts Network (LAN) In this lesson visual arts teachers as well as students will learn how to use the local area network created specifically for the visual arts program at our school and our associate schools within the Palm Springs Unified School District. With our increasing use of technology and the implementation of digital arts and video production programs throughout our district the technology department created a LAN system to accommodate visual arts teachers to transfer files to students such as assignments and tutorials and for students to submit assignments to their instructors. Content Area | Digital Imaging & Design | Digital Photography Grade Level 9th | 10th | 11th | 12th Objective As a result of this lesson learners will be able to log on to the visual arts network, access the LAN and receive, transfer and store files within their student folders on the DHSHS Video Local Area Network. Standards | Arts, Media, and Entertainment | California Career Technical Education Curriculum 4.0 Technology Students know how to use contemporary and emerging technological resources in diverse and changing personal, community, and workplace environments: 4.2 Understand the use of technological resources to gain access to, manipulate, and produce information, products and services. 4.5 Know the key technological skills appropriate for occupations in the arts industry. 10.0 Technical Knowledge and Skills Students understand the essential knowledge and skills common to all pathways in the Arts, Media, and Entertainment sector: 10.10 Use technical applications in the creative process, where appropriate. Relative Advantage Learners will experience first hand the advantages of local area networks within an educational institution as well its usage in the workplace through accessing, receiving, transferring and storing data. They will apply these skills to promote a paperless society within a technological environment. Timeline | 55 minutes (class period)

Materials | Short Cuts / Procedure Handout Grouping Strategies The classroom consists of 36 iMac student computer workstations that are networked and have Internet access. A lecture area with 36 desks and a digital overhead projector that will be used for the demonstration. Desks are situated in groups of four for student collaboration. Learning Activities 1. Students will watch the demonstration on the projector in the lecture area. 2. Students will take notes and have a five minute collaboration time to check for understanding. 3. Students will then proceed to their work stations. 4. Students will perform the log on task using their student identification number and birthdate. 5. Students will access the DHSHS-VID folder. 6. Students will select GAndrade folder and select DHSVID 3 folder. 7. Students will create a simple text edit document with name, age grade and a simple sentence that states their understanding on how the LAN works. 8. Students will drop off their text edit file in the drop off folder. 9. Students will open the pickup folder and retrieve a file called Warhol Demo 10. Student will open the student folder and identify their personal folder. Assessment Each student will perform the above procedures through a performance task to demonstrate knowledge and skill set. ELL and Special Needs Students with limited English will be paired up with an early or intermediate advanced ELL student. Realia, visuals and SDAIE strategies will be applied if needed. Special needs students will be paired up with either the teachers aid or special education aid for help if needed. An adjustable desk will be available for students in wheelchairs. Accessing Network Procedures 1. Watch the demonstration on the projector in the lecture area. 2. Take notes and have a five minute collaboration time to check for understanding with your group. 3. Proceed to your designated work stations. 4. Perform a command K to access the network 4. Log on by typing in PSCCVIDEO-CTE, click on connect 5. Type in your identification number and birthdate; click on connect 6. Select the DHSHS-VID folder; click okay 7. Select GAndrade folder 8. Select DHSVID 3 folder. 9. Create a simple text edit document with your first/last name, age, grade and write a simple sentence that states your understanding on how the LAN works. 10. Drop off their text edit file in the drop off folder. 11. Open the pickup folder and retrieve a file called Warhol Demo; drag it to the desktop 12. Open the student folder and identify your name folder. 13. Close the network by performing a command W
