Guided Questions: 1. Based on the video, what is a good drama? 2. What were the positive things about this drama? 3. What were the negative things about this drama? 4. In what ways could this drama be improved? 5. What other forms of art support this drama performance? By Christy: My definition of a good drama performance Drama is the composition of writing that is performed on a stage in front of audiences. It is used to portray life or a character usually involving conflicts, issues, or emotions through body gestures, actions, movements and dialogue typically designed for a particular drama performance. It could also be described as a play with specific characters, plot, problems, issues, solutions and morals etc. Drama 1 Pidato Lucu, Sambutan Salah- Ludruk humor This first drama could be classified as a traditional drama. This is because the costumes used were traditional Indonesian clothes. The main subject was about a speech for Indonesias Independence Day Celebration. The Javanese language was used. It could be a comedy, because the story and words used to express it were hilarious. I really liked the idea of the story which was a speech for Indonesias Independence Day Celebration. It was taken from a real- life situation and that shows how these issues can be sources of inspiration to create artworks and performances. The way these actors performed was very convincing. They used some elements of drama that I have seen before which are: Focus: the actors were confident about their performance. They focused on the scene and character that they were playing. I think that they have succeeded in directing the audiences, and my, focus and attention towards the performance. Mood: The actors used their moods to create dramatic tension in the scenes they were in. This moved the audiences emotionally. The audience was able to feel the mood of the scene. In this drama, the

mood of the scene showed how character A became annoyed with character B, because character B kept criticizing character A about how he should deliver the speech. Role: The actors really understood their roles and performed them with confidence. They were certain of their characters personality and attitudes. This made the scene more believable for the audience. This enhanced the meaning of the play to the audience. What I didnt like about this drama was the use of costumes, se ttings, and the sound system. The costumes were simple and usual but to me they were not special enough. The setting stayed the same for the whole performance and it was not very convincing. It looked like a normal picture of a village hung behind the actors and there was no use of props. The sound system was not that good, as the actors voices echoed as they bounced off the walls. This was caused by the choice of room which, I think, was not so suitable for a drama performance. To improve this drama, I think that the producers should think about designing more interesting costumes. They should also consider the use of a variety of settings as well as the use of props to support each setting. Last but not least, I think that they should improve the quality of their sound system by choosing a better and more appropriate place to perform a drama, so that the voices of the actors could be heard clearly. Drama 2 Singkatan Kata- kata Lucu Ludruk Humor Jawa (1) Just like the first drama, this second drama could also be classified as a traditional drama and a comedy for the similar reasons. The costumes used were traditional batik clothes. The language used was the Javanese language. The way the actors used humorous words in their dialogues was very funny. The same with the first drama, I liked how the subject of this drama was taken from a daily life situation. It used words we commonly use in our daily conversations. The producers of this drama modified the meaning of words to make them seem new and funny. The actors also applied the elements and criteria for a good drama. They did this by showing confidence and using expressions, gestures and intonations, etc. Again, what I didnt find interesting about this drama were the costumes used. The costumes were not interesting enough and to me, the not very memorable. The sound system was not strong enough but as the performance was presented outdoors, so that could be tolerated. One last thing that I disliked about this drama was that there was hardly any contrast between the shapes, sizes, and colors of objects. In fact barely any props used to support the performance. To improve this, the producers should consider the use of costumes with more uniqueness to attract more audiences, especially the ones who

have a passion for fashion. They should think about the way they use contrasts and differences to create meaning. Visually, this will make the performance more interesting. Other Forms of Arts that support a Drama Performance Performing Arts: Music: In musical theaters, words are not the only things used to express a story. Musical recitals are also used to express a story. The music performed could be sung or played on musical instruments. Music could accompany a drama as well. For example when something unexpected happens a horn could be blown to express the emotion of being surprised. Dance: Sometimes, dance is involved in drama performances. Commonly, musical theaters involves dance when a music is performed. Dance is the art of telling a story through a variety of body movements, so it could definitely be involved in a drama to enhance the meaning of a story. Mime: Mime performances could be involved in drama as mime is a basic level of drama. Before performing a drama, many actors learn how to perform a mime so that they could get use to the different movements of their characters body. This will support their drama performance.
