    The Santa Fe Railroad was experiencing regular track misalignment from roadbed settlement near Atchison, Missouri, which was a major maintenance expense. Since Hayward Baker had successfully treated similar problems using lime/fly ash injections, Santa Fe selected this technique for a long-term solution. Electric cone penetrometer testing revealed weak, saturated soils up to 20 feet deep with large ballast pockets. Hayward Baker designed an injection program to stabilize the soil every 20 feet deep based on the test results. Work began injecting slurry within 24 hours to stabilize the soils in sequenced sections.

    Electric Cone Penetrometer Testing (CPT)
    Specifically designed equipment allows the injection of lime/fly
    ash slurry with no disruption of normal traffic flows.

    stabilize every crib spacing 20 feet deep, and
    production was initiated within 24 hours of testing
    completion. Work was performed in sequenced
    operation to ensure optimumslurry injection into
    thesoils.

    One year later, an on-site inspection revealed no further
    settlement in the injected sections, but the untreated track had
    settled as much as four inches. Post injection CPT confirmed a
    significant strength increase in the stabilized subgrade.
