Holy Names University Lesson Plan

Title of Lesson: Breaking it all Down Grade: Subject Area: th th 7 and 8 Algebra 1 Anticipated Time Frame: Classroom Organization: 45 minutes Group (6-8 students) Resource and Materials: -White Board -Smart Board -Elmo -Writing Materials (pen, pencils, erasers, etc.) -Practice Worksheets Central Focus or Big Idea of Learning Segment: Students should be able to factor/simplify trinomials California Content Standard(s): 11.0 Apply basic factoring techniques to second-degree polynomials Specific Learning Objectives: - Learning to factor trinomials of the form x2+bx+c Prerequisites: 1). Basic math skills prior to Algebra (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) 2). Solve basic algebraic equations

Key ELD Standards: ***Word Analysis, Fluency, and Systematic Vocabulary Development -Vocabulary and Concept Development -Comprehension and Analysis of Grade-Level Appropriate Text -Structural Features of Informational Materials Challenging Academic language and concepts: Most students dont know how to factor out problems or specific rules that govern these types of problems (i.e relationship between signs of factors and desired product/sum) Access to the curriculum/modifications: 1). Lesson will be accessible to English language learners because there will be plenty of visuals and they will be mandated to work with English speakers in class

2). Lesson will be accessible to students with special needs because smaller portions of the lesson will be given to the special needs aid so they can review to them as well. If student doesnt have an aid for a particular day I will make necessary changes. These changes would involve me working directly with the student, but there work would be in a format that is catered to them 3).The Smartboard will be able accessible to students so they can be interactive with the problems given in class. The students can go up to the Smartboard and do the problems using the different tools provided by the interactive learning board

Assessment: Class work will be assigned daily after I have introduced a lesson (students are allowed to work in pairs if they dont understand). I will monitor the class by walking around to see who is doing their work and who is not. Some of the class work will be from the previous day homework and will also have some problems that I will be starting that day. Class work problems will be put up on the Elmo for all students to see and watch as I guide them through.

Instructional Sequence Set or Introduction: All activities will coincide with promoting read aloud, think aloud, and reciprocal teaching. Read Aloud: Helps with level of complexity can be used (help with critical thinking) Think Aloud: Metacognitive process that allows students to hear how Im approaching the problem (allows students to think outside the box or expand their cognitive skills) Reciprocal Teaching: Read the question, clarify, summarize, predict answer, review question again Teacher Directed Instructions: All assignments will have clear instructions for students to follow in order for them to factor trinomials properly. If additional help is needed, I can assists the students during and after class. Checks for Understanding/On-going Informal Assessment: There will be a couple of problems that will be given toward the end of the class to see if students really understood the lesson. These problems are considered to be their exit tickets that I will assess before they leave class. Closure: -Students in class will be given the opportunity to show if there was another application they used to solve the math problems -Most work will be shared with the classroom even if errors are present because other students

may be struggling with the same issues -Students will be able to give their own math scenarios to make sure they have a clear understanding -If class time permits, students can start their homework assignments. This will be some extra time for them to ask any questions about the assignment
