Did you know that DNA is used in crime investigations and here are three ways DNA works

in crime investigations. The three ways are using DNA to solve crimes, use of DNA in criminal investigations, and the importance of DNA in a sexual assault case. DNA can be used to identify the criminal when biological evidence exists at a crime scene. Some powerful justice tools are deoxyribonucleic acid/DNA. In some cases when a suspect has not yet been identified and they have a DNA sample from the suspect they can compare the DNA from the crime scene and can find the criminal. If a suspect has been identified a sample of that persons DNA can be compared with the evidence from the crime scene. If you obtain biological evidence from the crime scene, compare them, and analyze the two DNA samples you have your criminal. They use this machine called CODIS they use this to compare crime scene evidence, to a database of DNA profiles obtained from convicted offender. If someone is convicted of a crime they are required to provide a sample of DNA. CODIS can also link a sample of DNA taken from someone years ago and compare the DNA from the crime scene in storage, they can put the two together and compare them even though the crime occurred years ago (unknown, 2014). DNA can be found almost anywhere at a crime scene. It could also be contaminated easily. Any contamination of the evidence could jeopardize identifying the criminal and solving the crime. Any materials left at the crime scene contains DNA such as blood, saliva, perspiration, hair, teeth, mucus, fingernails, or semen. What is DNA? DNA is the instructions for the body's entire genetic makeup. A person has the same DNA throughout his entire body and is located in every cell (Martinez, 2014). In a sexual assault case DNA is especially important because it prove the crime occurred. To preserve the DNA in a sexual assault case the vicim should not shower/bathe, comb hair, change clothes, or use the restroom. You should not do any of these things because if he left fingerprints on you such as your hair, clothes, or body. What happens to DNA? After the DNA is collected and examined it is stored or sent to the crime lab. If it i sent to the crime lab they use the DNA to create a DNA profile (unknown, 2014). In conclusion DNA is a very important tool for criminal investigations.

This portrays to the tv show Dexter because in this show the main character Dexter, his job is a blood spatter analyst in the forensics department. My first paragraph was about how DNA is used to solve crimes, I connected my fist paragraph to Dexter because it reminded me that at crime scenes he finds and takes DNA samples from suspects and crime scenes. My second paragraph was about where DNA could be found. I made a connection to Dexter because he takes samples from fingernails, toothbrushes, hair stands, or spatters of blood. My third paragraph was about how DNA is used in sexual assault cases. My third connection was also made to Law In Order: Special Victims Unit. I made this connection because on one of the episodes a woman was assaulted and she did everything she wasn't suppose to, to preserve the DNA.
