Monday, February 24th Favorite Character Day (Each class selects a book & will dress up as a character from the book. We will vote next week and Ill inform you all of the class decision.) February 25thMystery Reader Day (Activity will be done at school.) February 26thDr. Seuss Hat Day (Make a Dr. Seuss hat to wear to school this day.) Mrs. Youngs parents are invited to have lunch and attend book fair . February 27thSnuggle Up With A Book Day (Students may bring their favorite book & stuffed animal to school to snuggle up & read. We will do an announcement for everyone to drop everything and read sometime during the day.) February 28thWear Green Day (Students are encouraged to wear green on this day. We will have green eggs and ham for lunch.)

HOMEWORK Please read for 20 minutes each night and record your time on the February reading log. We will have a reading test on Thursday 2/20. Math homework is due on Friday 2/21. Please practice and review spelling words for test on Friday 2/21.

We have been working on:


Reading, Writing, & Language Arts

Writing daily in our journal, focusing on using proper capitalization, punctuation, sequential order, using appropriate 2nd grade sentences, and developing story with a clear beginning, middle, and ending. Completed a newer version of Spelling Tic Tac Toe that included finding spelling words in a word search. Made up silly rhymes using our spelling words. Created a character and wrote a paragraph called My Bad Day from the characters perspective. Learned and recited the poem Mr. Lincoln. Students also highlighted adjectives and illustrated it. Listened to Antarctic Antics: A Book of Penguin Poems. Independently read Scholastic News Road to Gold and used context clues to complete Vocabulary Detective. Small group reading with Mrs. Young; working on comprehension practice, answering questions using text evidence, comparing, contrasting, understanding genre, and vocabulary. Learned new vocabulary that included: boast, victory, ashamed, dash,

holler, plenty, similarities, and wisdom. Daily news; focusing on editing work. Checking capitalization, punctuation, spelling, word endings and finding nouns (proper & common), verbs (action & linking) subjects, predicates, plurals, compound words, and adjectives. Also we have been working on writing interesting, detailed, second grade sentences.

We discussed the Winter Olympics that are currently being held in Sochi, Russia. We read an article called Road to Gold about ice skater Evan Lysaceks journey and training to compete in the Olympics. We created the Great Barrier Reef in our classroom. Some of the reef animals we created include coral, a blue-ringed octopus, and jellyfish.
