Kole Randall 2-21-14 Hum 1100 Critical response to freedom and justice 1.

Song: stand by me around that world- playing for peace: peace through music 2. Poem: let America be America again Langston Hughes 3. Declaration: the declaration of independence- written 1776 4. Video: MLK letter from a Birmingham jail- a call for duty 1963 5. Last week: a fable for tomorrow- silent spring The song I have chosen to talk about is actually my favorite of all the songs we have listened to so far. It is entitled stand by me around the world by Playing for Change: peace through music. I think that the question that this musical peace tries to answer is can music change the world, and can it create peace? I think most of all thought it tries to see if we can come together to create this peace. I think that this does illustrate freedom justice and responsibility. I feel that throughout the song you see people from all over the world that feel the same way we do here they feel for music, and that we are all the same. To me that in itself speaks highly that we can connect and be equal if given a chance. For the poem I have chosen let America be America again. I choice this due to the fact that it poses the question of can we be what our ideals suggest, can we be what we feel we once were? I think this song points out how we should. It shows us the desire we have to be free. When he says let it be the dreamers dream I just find that the food description of what we all long for and our desire for freedom. The examples he gives over and over give us a good view of our responsibility, when he points out the different groups of people, like the farmer and that is our responsibility to ensure that this man is free. If we look at it through Thuroughs theories he would very much agree that this kind of poem tells us what we need to be doing, and that its our responsibility to do it to ensure this freedom. For the declaration or essay I chose the declaration of independence, but not the reason many would think. I didnt chose it because Ive heard it before so its easier or anything, I chose it because I first off love what it has done for the world, but I also love the fact that it was just such a strong declaration that I really believe in strongly. It addresses the question I think is why the colonies should be freed of oppression. It really takes a lot of different rhetorical appeals by bringing up ethical, logical, and emotional responses to this declaration.

I chose for the video to talk about MLK s letter from a Birmingham jail. The question that he addresses here in this letter is segregation right? He obviously addresses us with many different experiences and ethical fallacies that help illustrate his point very well. He addresses the use of civil disobedience but in a peaceful way he mentions not being afraid of the word contention, but we should do it in a peaceful way out in the open. His suggestions are very ethically and logically based when he uses the best analogies and examples of the ministers and all the others who put him into prison. The segment I have chosen from last weeks class is a fable for tomorrow I was so very intrigued by this short yet powerful essay. I loved the views I brought in a visual sense for me with the

descriptions of the environment around, the bees, the flowers. It honestly made it feel light, and reminded me of one of my favorite places, and then to put the cold ending onto it. For me it really struck and pathos cord. Making me feel very invested emotionally, and im guessing that was its intention. The author wanted us to be emotionally involved to help us see the real question in mind, of what are we doing to ourselves and the environment and how can it affect us? It mostly communicates the need for responsibility and its overarching effect on our freedom. He tries to point out like what we learned this week about the video climate refugees on how not taking care of a problem now leads to not being able to escape it later. Response to the U.N. declaration: Looking at the U.N. declaration, it is a very ambitious and desirable goal for the world to reach, yet we fall so short of that goal. Every day there are those who are oppressed by others, by taking away their rights, degrading them, and stripping them of these rights that should be allotted to us with our existence. More so disturbing then the fact of this happening to people, is the thought of where it is coming from, those sworn to protect those rights. When we are told that our rights to live where we choose, and how we choose is suddenly stripped for nothing we have to do with, with the reasoning being national security and Contradicting the very ideals they are trying to uphold. Benjamin franklin once said those who would sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither. These ideals we support, of freedom, security, unalienable rights and we will continue to do so as long as we have need to stand up for them we will no matter what odds because its our duty and responsibility. using the persona of MLK.
