FOR RELEASE ON JULY 11th 2013

! ! Guildford 1st July, 2013 ! The EyeHub Internet of Things Consortium has won funding from the Technology Strategy Board, the UKs innovation agency, to improve safety at the University of Surrey and across Guildford. The consortium is developing a suite of applications, one of which is a mobile app called MyGuardian that will allow students, staff and the public to exchange information relating to their personal safety with security officials. ! The University takes student and staff safety very seriously and is eager to support this initiative. While crime rates are low, the campus security team wants to develop a method for students and staff to feel more secure as they move about the University. This provides a perfect trial environment before extending the reach of the app into neighbouring Guildford locations and beyond. The MyGuardian app will collect data feeds from smartphones and sensors across the campus and allow students and staff to share their whereabouts with trusted friends, as well as alert the campus security team of their location in an emergency. The app and its infrastructure will be launched in the autumn to coincide with the start of University term. This is the first in a suite of apps that the consortium will release to prove the capability of EyeHub as an effective connector in the Internet of Things and to showcase the opportunities that access to such data can provide to campus users and the wider community. This pioneering technology consortium is led by local Guildford business Flexeye and the partners include Eseye, the University of Surrey, Guildford Borough Council, Axillium Research, the National Physical Laboratory, the Open Data Institute, Designswarm Industries and ManagePlaces. Its advisory board includes representatives from IBM, ARM and Parliament.! ! ! !
