For the month of March, 2014 our class will be studying English Language Arts Resources: Crossroads Grade 8 Gage Educational Publishing Spelling Dictionary
Unit: Personal Focus Vocabulary -Oral/Listening Class discussions following readings of short stories, poetry Message and personal reflections Parody Practice self-expression by making connections with prior Point of view knowledge and experience and developing personal Symbols opinions based on readings done in class Comic Describing personal experiences to others Non-fiction -Reading Fiction Introduction of new reading log system nightly reading Fable reflection in reading log (20 minutes at home) Analysis Individual and group readings of short stories, poems, and Personal text non-fiction related to identity and personal expression Personal writing -Writing Tone Reading reflection journals through a critical thinking question on Fridays (after a weeks reading) Writing meaningful personal texts to express self, make connections, remember and respond to other texts o Through journals, creative pieces posters, comics, letters -Optics: The eye and vision Vocabulary Understand the main parts of the eye and their purpose Identify the process of which the eye works to create images Attached on a separate Compare the functioning of the eye to other optical systems Science Apply knowledge about the eye through a dissection of a vocabulary mammalian eye Describe common defects in human vision and describe ways of handout sheet with correcting or extending human vision instructions This unit will be done through many group discussions and activities and students will have a chance to apply their knowledge through various types of assessments. -Linear Relations Vocabulary Solve a problem with integers using the order of operations Model a linear equation and solve the equations using models Variable Create and solve a linear equation symbolically Distributive Solve a given problem using a linear equation and record the property process Expand Apply the distributive property to solve a given linear equation Linear Create a table of values by substituting values for a variable relation Construct a graph from the equation of a linear relation Ordered pair Discrete data Each class in Mathematics begins with a review from the last thing we study. Student learning will be supported through teacher modelling and student practice as part of the group. Students will have a chance to apply their knowledge through concrete activities.
