-The instructor gave us letters to give to our cooperating teachers at the school.

How important is it to teach phonics? How much emphasis should be placed on it?
While phonics instruction is very important, it should not be the sole focus of reading
instructions. The book suggests that 25% of the time be spent on phonics instruction.

Onset- initial consonant at the beginning of the word. (m)


Rime- chunk of letters that make a particular sound (ead) and relate to head
Rime- chunk of letters that make a particular sound (ow)

Work with the student to chunk the first to make the beginning syllable /med/ and add the
ending.

A.D. raised some questions about a student in the classroom that she is working with that
has minimal reading skills and a low reading ability level.

Time was given to work on lesson plans.

Assignment: Lesson plans due, read Chapter 11, be able to write a journal entry based on
what we’ve read and class discussion (we’ll write it in class), pay close attention to
information about setting up a writing workshop. We’ll do miscue analysis and running
record activities in class.
