Alisha Reeve MUSE 376 Choral Methods Citation Directing the Choral Music Program Chapter 19: Presenting

g the Performance Kenneth H. Phillips 2004 This chapter covers mostly concert etiquette and programs and programming. It discusses what is and isnt appropriate to include in a program. This means not only what pieces are appropriate, but what is appropriate to print in the program. It also discusses why it is appropriate to program a concert for the audience. It also discusses dress rehearsals, and the different jobs such as stagehands and ushers that make concerts run more smoothly. In my opinion, stagehands and ushers are important so that the choirs can enter and leave the stage quickly and efficiently. Generally these might be older students, or parent volunteers unless the performance venue provides such things. These roles help corral students and help keep them quiet and orderly as they enter and exit the venue. They might also be responsible for the students in their holding areas be this within the auditorium or another room outside the performance hall. Concert programs are also very important in my view. To me a program is a way to educate the audience. Each of the pieces should have notes about the background and history and the composer. It might also include what the students learned through the process of learning the piece. Ensemble members names should also be included along with the director and accompanist and perhaps the head of the performance venue. This is also a good place for special thanks. One final thing might be the inclusion of adds that were sold to help fundraise for the choir.
