Most people living in the cities of Ireland at the beginning of the 20th C. in Ireland lived under awful conditions. Slums High unemployment High population density Poor sanitation Most of the jobs that did exist were poorly paid and employees were made to work long hours often in bad conditions

In 1908 Jim Larkin founded the Irish Transport and General workers Union (ITGWU). Set up to improve wages and conditions James Connolly Belfast branch Caused massive concern among the Irish employers By 1913 had 10,000 members

Muprhy owned the Independent, and hotels and department stores in Dublin Massively opposed to the ITGWU Demanded all of his employees to leave the union or else they would be fired Larkin called a strike Murphy then locked out all members of the union This lockout lasted 5 months with workers being helped by the unions in Ireland and Britain and wealthy sympathizers , but they were starving and could not last.

Eventually the workers gave up, left the ITGWU and returned to work Larkin left country for America but Connolly remained in Ireland . Connolly wanted to create an Irish socialist republic. As well as organise the lockout, Connolly Founded the Irish labour party in 1912 and Brought about the Irish Citizens Army to protect workers from the police and gangs hired by the employers. Connolly went on to try achieve his goals of a socialist republic in the 1916 rising
