Introduction
In this experiment, we will analyze a water sample. We will see the presence of Na+, K+, Li+, Ca+2, Ba+2, Sr+2, Cu+, & Fe+3 ions. By seeing the presence of the group IA & IIA metal ions, well see if it led to high salinity of the fresh water. Were going to report if the samples had toxic levels of Cu+ & Fe+. If we determine if the water had high salinity then the water was toxic enough for the massive deaths of fishes in Columbia River located in Montana.

Experimental
Reagents: 1) ions solutions 0.5M: a)Na+ b)K+ c)Li+ d)Ca+ e)Ba+2 f)Sr+2 2) 3) 4) 5) River Sample 25ml 400ppm Fe Solution in SCN25ml 400ppm Cu solution in SCN0.1 M Iron(III) nitrate solution

Equipment: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. MeasureNet Spectrometer Cuvettes (9) Nichrome Wires Volumetric flask Beral pipes

Experiment 1: Emission Analysis

Retrieve the 0.5 ion solutions. Light Bunsen burner & clean it by heating the nichrome wire & immersing it into distilled water near the intake vent. Then position the burner in line with the spectrometer, & prepare the spectrometer to take in emission data on the MeasureNet. Place one ion solution in watch glass next to burner. Then place a nichrome wire over the flame & heat the wire until it glows, then immerse the wire into the ion solution in the watch glass near the intake vent. When flame changes color, sample the spectrometer data & save the data. You must repeat these steps for all of the ion solutions & water sample. Be sure to save all data for graphing.

Experiment 2: Absorption Analysis

Retrieve 400ppm solutions of Cu+2 & Fe+3 & prepare 5 different concentrations of solutions for each. Use 2ml, 3ml, 5ml, & 7ml of 400ppm to produce concentrations of 80ppm, 120ppm, 200ppm, & 280ppm at 10ml. Use cuvettes for absorption analysis & ready the MeasureNet. Run absorption test on all 10 samples & Be sure to save all data for graphing.
