Macbeth Act One, Scene One

1. Describe the mood and setting of Macbeth.

This play takes place in 11th century Scotland, back to a time when monarchy was still present. The opening scene of the play is one of suspense that is filled with darkness. In addition, the witches themselves present an image of the evil and sinister of the world. The scene also seems ominous when the witches speak, Fair is foul, and foul is fair. Hover through the fog and filthy air because they speak of meeting Macbeth after the hurlyburlys done.

2. Explain the significance of the prophecies of the Weird Sisters.

The prophecy the Weird Sisters give is related to Macbeth after the war is over. This prophecy is significant because it gives the idea to Macbeth that the only way he can become the king is to kill the current king, Duncan, first. In addition, when the sisters say that he is also to be the Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth thinks that they are crazy. However, when it is proven that he is the new Thane of Cawdor, it proves the words of the Sisters, and further motivates Macbeth into thinking that he may truly be the next king of Scotland.

3. In what ways might the prophecies of the Weird Sisters foreshadow Macbeths fate?
The prophecies of the Weird Sisters foreshadow Macbeths fate because it is these prophecies that push Macbeth into thinking that he should kill King Duncan in order to ascend the throne. In addition, the prophecies might foreshadow what kind of ruler Macbeth could become when he becomes the king. To further effect, the Witches might not necessarily be happy for Macbeths

future, as it is proven and shown in the play that what is foul to others is fair to them. This could possibly mean that Macbeths kingship may be fair to them but foul for him.

4. In what ways is the quote fair is foul, and foul is fair significant?
The quote is significant because it can also mean, in simpler terms, good is evil, and evil is good. Because the Weird Sisters said this, it can mean that for them, evil is the way they favor things to go (the good). In contrast, to the audience and other humans, the good for them is what the Witches view as evil. This is also significant because this will no doubt affect the rule of Macbeth, since the Witches are anticipating his rule, which can mean that negative events will occur to Macbeth.
