MONDAY ARRIVE/UNPACK Homework Packet (until 9:15) Read Aloud: Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges Social Studies: Civil Rights Movement Talk about the injustices in education system. Introduction to Ruby Bridges Add to idea web about courage, doing what's right, etc.

TUESDAY ARRIVE/UNPACK Literacy: Children Making a Difference A similar activity and discussion to modern-day heroes except with a focus on young people who have made a difference. Articles, blogs, video clips, etc. Add to idea web about advocacy, activism, etc.

Literacy: Modern Day Heroes (see lesson plan) Students will read about everyday people who are heroes. Begin to think about advocacy and how students can make a difference

Social Studies: Civil Rights and Today There will be a compare and contrast of similar injustices from the past and present. Students will compare Ruby Bridges and Malala Yousafzai and their fight for education. Students will be given background information about Malala Yousafazai

Literacy: Change Agents in Our Own Lives Students will think about and discuss the importance of standing up for what you believe despite obstacles. Discuss what motivates people to stand for what they believe in. Ask students to think about qualities they admire, role models they have, why they admire them, etc. Add to idea web about change agents, bravery, etc.

Literacy: Research about social justice issues Students will be given time to research and learn more about a social justice issue they are interested in.
