Ihavegrownalotasteacherthroughoutthismodule.Ihavefinallyfiguredouthowto displaymyenthusiasmwithoutfeelingtoouncomfortableorweird.Ireallynoticedthisduring mylastteachingepisodeandIfeltitprogressthroughallfourteachingepisodesInoticedfrom reflectingaftermyteaching(onaction)andInoticedwhileteaching(inaction).Ihavealso learnedalotofdifferentwaystosetuptheprovidedspacetousemodifiedorsmallsidedgames toallowformoreOTRs.Forexample,splittingabasketballcourtinhalfandthenusingit horizontallyforgamesandactivitieswillgivestudentsmoreopportunitiestorespond,more touchesinwhateveractivityorunittheyaredoing,andagreatchanceforsuccess.While takingthismodule,Ilearnedhowimportantitistoexplainthewhyofeverythinginphysical education.Explainingthewhyallowsthestudentstounderstandthecontentbetteranditwill keepthestudentsmoreinterestedinthesubjectmatter.Ihavelearnedtheimportanceof promotinglifelongfitnessandphysicalactivityinphysicaleducation.Noonewillbeabletoplay traditionalgameslikefootball,basketball,orvolleyballforeverthisiswhyitsimportanttoteach activitieslikeyoga,aerobicactivities,andsnowshoeing.Ialsolearnedhowimportantplanning andpreparationiswhenteachingforexample,whenIdidn'thaveatransitionwritteninmy lessonplan,whileIwasteaching,theflowofthelessonwasdisruptedbythelackoforganization ofthetransition.
Whenteachingphysicaleducationtohighschoolstudentsit'simportantto(1)befirmbut alsotobefriendly.Asateacher,youwanttoconnectwiththestudentsinsomewayitcouldbe somethingsosmallaswearingthesamebrandofshoesandsayingniceshoes.When teaching,youjustwanttogettoknowthestudentsandconnectwiththem,thiswillallowthe studentstogainmorerespectforyou.Also,(2)studentswanttobetreatedlikeadultsandnot smallchildren.Thisisimportantbecauseifstudentsfeelliketheyarebeingtreated inappropriately,studentswillloseinterestinthelesson,loserespectfortheteacher,andstart becomingboredwhichwillmostlikelycausemisbehavior.Somewaystotreatstudentslike adultsaretogivethemresponsibilitiessuchasdistributingorcollectingequipment,beingin chargeofthewarmup,orhavingthemrefereegamesforoneanother.Averysimplewayto treatstudentslikeadultsistoaddressthemasadultswithwordslikeladiesandgentlemanor folksinsteadofusingboysandgirlsorguys.(3)Studentswanttoknowthewhyofjust abouteverythingtheyaretaught.Asateacherit'simportanttounderstandthewhyandtobe abletoexplainthewhy.Ifstudentscanunderstandandexplainthewhyofaskill,movement, orstrategytheywillbeabletoperformthemovementorstrategymoreeffectivelyaswellasbe morelikelytorememberit.Forexample,whenteachingatEastLongmeadowIalwaystried focusingonthewhywhenteachingthestudents.Whydowesnapthewristwhilespiking? Becauseitcreatestopsin.Whydowewanttocreatetopspin?Becauseitwillallowtheballto travelindifferentdirections.Questionsandexplanationslikethesewillgivestudentstheability tocomprehendandperformwhattheyarebeingtaughtmoreeffectively.(4)Whenteaching physicaleducationtohighschoolstudentsit'simportanttoteachskills,games,andmovements thatthestudentswillbeabletousefortherestoftheirlives.Thisexamplewasusedearlierbutit issocrucialtoteachstudentsthiswaybecausestudentsneedtoknowhowtheycanbe physicallyactiveiftheydonothave11otherfriendstoplayvolleyballwithoriftheydonothave
theappropriateequipment.IreallylikedthatMr.Gerryallowedmetoteachbootcampstothe studentsbecauseIwasteachingthestudentsactivitiesthattheycanperformfortherestoftheir livestostayfit,active,andhealthywithoutusinganyequipmentorplayinggames. ThemostimportantlessonIlearnedaboutteachingthatIwillcarryforwardistohavefun withthestudentswhiledisplayingenthusiasm.Itsimportanttohavefunbecauseiftheteacher isn'thavingfunordisplayingenthusiasmthenitwillmostlikelybeatoughlessontoteach.The studentsfeedoffoftheenergythattheteacherbrings,evenifitisn'tanextremelyexcitingunitto beparticipatingin.Aslongastheteacherisshowingenthusiasmthestudentswillbeengaged, ontask,andparticipatinginthelesson.AlthoughatfirstitfeelsweirditpaysoffandeventuallyI gotreallycomfortableactingthiswaywiththestudents.FortherestofmyteachingcareerIwill rememberthisanddisplaymyenthusiasmasbestasIpossiblycan.
