Narrative
Evaluation
of
Carlie
Canfield
Carlie
Canfield
was
my
student
teacher
in
the
fall
of
2013
at
Washington
Community
High
School
in
Washington,
IL.
The
current
enrollment
of
the
school
is
1,189
students.
The
school
is
made
up
of
92.9%
white
students,
2.1%
African
American
students,
1.3%
Asian
students,
2.4%
Hispanic
students
and
.4%
American
Indian
students.
Mrs.
Canfields
student
teaching
assignment
was
eight
weeks
long.
It
included
teaching
two
different
art
classes
and
helping
with
art
club.
The
classes
Carlie
taught
were
Art
1
and
Basic
Photography.
The
classes
were
made
up
of
freshman
through
senior
students.
There
was
an
average
of
18
students
in
each
class.
During
this
student
teaching
placement,
Mrs.
Canfield
demonstrated
strengths
in
preparation,
confidence,
classroom
management,
organization
and
assessment.
Carlie
planned
each
lesson
thoroughly
with
common
core
standards
in
mind.
She
chose
projects
for
the
students
that
were
inspired
by
art
history
and
that
required
the
student
to
learn
new
techniques
and
develop
new
skills.
She
created
units,
worksheets,
and
quizzes
to
supplement
the
projects.
Carlies
lesson
preparation
was
evident
in
her
teaching.
I
observed
this
in
her
presentations
to
the
classes
as
well
as
her
ability
to
answer
questions
from
the
students.
The
classes
were
very
well
managed
by
Mrs.
Canfield.
She
avoided
discipline
problems
by
keeping
the
students
engaged
with
meaningful
activities
and
detailed
expectations.
In
addition,
she
was
confident
in
her
discipline
decisions
and
consistent
throughout
the
eight
weeks.
She
communicated
clearly
to
the
students
what
she
expected
of
them
and
she
kept
track
of
student
progress.
She
also
posted
directions
in
appropriate
locations
of
the
classroom.
These
were
effective
reminders
to
the
students
of
important
remarks
she
had
made
to
them.
Carlie
graded
all
assignments
in
a
timely
manner
and
provided
the
students
with
appropriate
feedback.
She
used
rubrics
to
accurately
assess
the
projects
and
progress.
It
is
difficult
to
point
out
areas
in
which
Carlie
needs
to
improve,
because
I
see
her
as
a
very
effective
teacher.
As
teachers,
we
all
need
to
update
our
lessons
and
educate
ourselves
yearly,
so
that
we
will
grow
and
improve.
I
have
watched
her
improve
as
a
teacher
during
the
short
time
she
has
been
at
Washington
and
I
am
confident
that
she
will
continue
to
grow
and
improve
throughout
her
teaching
career.
Throughout
Mrs.
Canfields
student
teaching,
she
developed
professional
relationships
with
teachers,
staff
and
administrators
that
reflected
respect
and
cooperation.
The
students
became

accustomed
to
approaching
Mrs.
Canfield
with
all
their
questions
and
concerns.
They
respected
her
and
treated
her
as
an
authority
and
artistic
resource.
Carlie
responded
to
emails
sent
by
parents
who
wanted
student
updates.
She
also
communicated
with
parents
at
fine
art
functions.
She
felt
personally
responsible
if
a
student
was
not
successful
in
her
classroom.
I
believe
that
Carlie
Canfield
will
be
an
asset
to
any
art
department.
She
has
all
of
the
qualities
that
an
art
teacher
should
have.
She
plans
effectively,
is
organized,
presents
herself
professionally,
and
is
approachable
for
the
students
and
yet
maintains
their
respect.
She
seems
to
enjoy
teaching
and
is
wiling
to
put
into
it,
the
time
and
hard
work
necessary
to
do
the
job
well.
I
recommend
Carlie
Canfield
to
any
employer
who
is
seeking
an
art
teacher.
