Free Fall Notes 2

Aim: Students will compare and contrast free fall motion in the up and down direction. Students will quantitatively analyze motion in the vertical direction. Students will calculate their own hang time and the hang time of a ball.

Do Now: A stone tumbles into a mine shaft and strikes bottom after falling for 4.2 seconds. How deep is the mine shaft?

What goes up must come down..

Noa throws a ball up into the air. The ball returns to her hand in 6 seconds. How high does the ball go? What speed was the ball travelling when it left Noas hand? Work with your partner and discuss what you know about the motion and, intuitively, what you think might be true. Record your thoughts.

Draw a picture of the motion.

What variables are the same for both the trip up and the trip down?

What is the speed of the ball at the highest point?

Noa throws a ball up into the air. The ball returns to her hand in 6 seconds. How high does the ball go? What speed was the ball travelling when it left Noas hand?

What is the velocity of the ball when it returns to the throwers hand at the same height that it was thrown?

Describe the motion to the left.

A volleyball is bumped upwards with an initial velocity of 27 m/s from 0.5 meters above the ground. Neglecting air resistance, how long is the ball in the air at the following points: a. 0.5 meters above the ground b. ground level Draw a picture and discuss the known and unknown variable. How will you break up the motion to simplify the analysis?

Name _____________________________ Free Fall Practice What goes up must come down 1. A kangaroo is capable of jumping to a height of 2.62 m. Determine the takeoff speed of the kangaroo.

2. If Michael Jordan has a vertical leap of 1.29 m, then what is his takeoff speed and his hang time (total time to move upwards to the peak and then return to the ground)?

3. A bullet leaves a rifle with a muzzle velocity of 521 m/s. While accelerating through the barrel of the rifle, the bullet moves a distance of 0.840 m. Determine the acceleration of the bullet (assume a uniform acceleration).

4. A baseball is popped straight up into the air and has a hang-time of 6.25 s. Determine the height to which the ball rises before it reaches its peak. (Hint: the time to rise to the peak is one-half the total hang-time.)
