Lesson Plan: Simple addition & Subtraction

Time: 1 Hour Learning objectives Recognising numbers -Simple addition - Number facts - single digit subtraction

Resources needed: - String or rope - Flash cards numbered 0-20 - Pegs

Pre activity: Educator to set up by making flash cards numbered 0-20. Set up a string or rope approximately 1-2 metres wide at childrens average eye level. Hang up by using pegs the number 0 flashcard at the start and the number 20 flashcard on the end. Body: As a whole class, ask students a series of questions, - If 0 is at the start of the string and 20 is at the end, where would you place the number 10 flashcard. - Ask the next student to add 3, minus 4 ect. Conclusion: As individuals give students their own printed number line to work on at their desk. Altering the task: - By altering the activity you could incorporate a dice and using the numbers rolled on the dice is what the child has to add or subtract.

Evaluation: Follow up with children if they enjoyed the activity and explain why they did or didnt. Share what number facts they learnt and go through answers as a class discussion.
