Seven Things Students Want to Know

1. Am I in the right room? To ensure that students know they are in the correct room, I will be sure to stand at the door daily to greet and welcome them into the classroom. Initially, I would like to have a seating chart with clearly labeled nametags on the desks. This will enforce that the student is exactly where he is supposed to be. 2. Where am I supposed to sit? As stated above, I will initially have a seating chart with clearly labeled nametags on each desk. This will give students a sense of ownership, will encourage completely randomized seating, and will also help me to quickly learn everyones names. 3. What are the rules in this classroom? This alternative certificate program has really stressed the importance of having a set behavior management plan prior to the start of school. I will think very seriously and set up a list of rules, consequences, rewards and routines for my classroom. Together, the students and I will review this list frequently in the first few weeks, and I will post them in plain view on a bulletin board. 4. What will I be doing this year? Prior to the start of the school year, I will have complied a set of procedures for how the classroom will be run. Like the rules, I will model and practice all the procedures with my students frequently over the first few weeks of class. Stations will be clearly labeled for easy recall. I will also briefly discuss the subjects that we will cover in class this year (reading, mathematics, science, etc). 5. How will I be graded? In an attempt to be a well-rounded and successful teacher, I will be utilizing a variety of methods to assess my students overall learning and comprehension. These methods will include, but are not exclusive to, testing, quizzes, oral reports, homework, projects, worksheets and classroom discussion. 6. Who is the teacher as a person? Its just as important for the students to get to know me, as it is for me to get to know them. Sharing a part of ourselves with others is essential to trust and communication, and is a process will flow naturally over time. Initially, I would like to do one or two get to know your neighbor games. 7. Will the teacher treat me as a human being? Hopefully this is not a question that will cross any of my students minds for any length of time. Regardless of age, students are people too, and I will treat them with as much respect and dignity as I expect them to behave towards me. Communication is important, and if any one of my students feels as if they are being treated unfairly, I will welcome them to share their feelings and reasoning to me.
