IreallyenjoyedmyinvolvementwiththeUCLALabschool.Istayeduntil9/18andobservedbothclassroom aminimumof15hoursperweeksince08/26.Ihaveneverbeforehelpedwiththesettingupofthe classroombeforethestartoftheyearsoIfoundthisveryhelpfulandeye-opening.Iwasreadingthe beginningchaptersofoneofmytextbooksthattalksaboutclassroommanagementandeverythingIhad readwashappeningrightbeforemyeyes.Isawteachersdiscussingthelayoutoftheclassroomandtaking intoconsiderationelectricaloutlets!Ialsohadtheopportunitytoasktheteachersquestionsasfaras acquiringschoolsuppliesandbudgetfriendlyretailers.Iknowthatifinthefuture,shouldIhaveany questionsIcanaskanyoftheteachersandgetasolidresponse.

Whatwasthemostvaluableexperience? IthinkIlearnedalotaboutclassroomorganizationandmanagementfromjustobserving.Ifoundit extremelyhelpfulthatIhadtheopportunitytoobservethreeverydifferentteachersandseetheir interactionsamongeachotherandwiththeirstudents.Itwasalsoveryinterestingtonotethedifferences amongthetwoclassroomsevenwhentheyweredoingtheexactsameactivities.Itwasalmostlikea scienceexperimentbecausethechangesisvariablesstoodoutsomuch. Also,IlearnedtositbackandobserveandnotfeellikeIshouldbedoingmorework.Iliketokeepbusy,but afterafewdays,Ilearnedtojustsinkintotheroleofobserverandbemorecomfortablewithit,insteadof tryingtodotoomanyprojects.FocusisimportantandbecauseofthisopportunityIfeelmorereadyformy classroomobservationsinthefuture.

Inwhatways,ifany,willthisexperienceimpactyourphilosophyaboutschools,teachingandlearning? IthinkthisexperiencehashelpedtoreaffirmthetypeofteacherIpicturemyselfbeing.Ienjoylearningand challengingmyselfandmystudentswithnewteachingmethodsandsubjects.TheteachersattheUCLA LabSchoolaresoenthusiasticaboutthesesamethingsandgivemeadditionalinspirationtocontinueon mytrajectoryasaneducator.Idontbelieveeitherstudentsorteachersshouldremainstaticintheir educationalgrowthandseeingtheLabteachersinactionwithintheclassroomservesasagoodmodel. Howcanweimprovethisprograminthefuture? Ithinktherecouldhavebeenmorecommunicationanddirectiongiventotheclassroomteachers.AsTEP studentswewereexcitedtohelpoutinanyway,andsometimeswetookontasksthatdidntallowforalot ofclassroominteraction.Perhapsasit-downtoclarifyrolesandresponsibilitieswouldhavebeenhelpful.
