Physical Education

less then 37% of students reported accumulating 60 min of physical activity 5 out of 7 days a week 25% played video/computer games for 3 plus hrs. each day rather then encouraging increased physical activity among youth, many schools focus on passing physical fitness tests, which teach students how to pass a test (short term) rather then teaching long term physical habits tests further discourage students to remain physically active outside of PE PE profession must change programs to promote and teach changes related to physical activity and healthy eating habits, so that students can continue to be physically active well after graduation

Excessive Weight

In 2009, 13% of high school students were obese 19.3% increase in obesity in 9 yrs. (from 2000) only 35% of high school students meet the recommended levels of physical activity Students with overweight parents have an 80% chance at becoming overweight themselves This is partially due to genetics, but mostly due to the parents lack of exercise and eating habits, which then become the students

Type 2 Diabetes
1.7 per 1000 people (ages 0-19) have type 2 diabetes Fitness of diabetic teenagers (due to lack of exercise) is much lower then nondiabetics This is due to most school nurses and teachers who are afraid of the students becoming hyperglycemic Many teens decrease the amount of voluntary exercise when entering middle school or high school
