WASIT GAS PROJECT Excavation safety

SAFETY WEEKLY TOPIC OF-12.MAY.2011


1. Identify a Competent Person. A competent person must be APPOINTED by the subcontractor executing the excavations. This person should be an experienced civil supervisor as a minimum, and be capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings, or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to personnel. He must inspect excavations daily and have authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate hazards and, if necessary, stop the work. 2. How to control hazards for an Excavation Before any work is performed and before any employee start or enter the excavation, a number of items must be checked and ensured: 1. CROSS CHECK the EXCAVATION and Confined Space Entry Work Permit. 2. ENSURE KNOWLEDGE or ELIMINATION of UNDER GROUND and OVER HEAD HAZARDS 3. DETERMINE WHICH PROTECTIVE SYSTEM SHALL be APPLIED, Sloping / Benching / Shoring /Shielding/ Barricading. 4. SLOPING/BENCHING MUST BE CONSIDERED IF EXCAVATION DEPTH IS MORE THAN 1.5 METER. 5. CONSULT THE JOB HAZARD ANALYSIS (JHA). 6. Execute the TBM ON SITE.ENSURE a SAFE MEANS of ACCESS/EGRESS. 7. TEMPORARY SPOIL PILES to be PLACED a MINIMUM 2M FROM THE EDGE. 8. ATMOSPHERIC TEST EXCAVATION MORE THAN 1.2 M DEPTH IF REQUIRED. 9. ENSURE SIGNS AND BARRICATION IN PLACE AND TRAFFIC CONTROLLED. 10. INSPECTED BY COMPETENT PERSON. 11. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE). 12. SECURITY OF NEAREST STRUCTURES / BUILDINGS. 13. Determination of locations of all underground / overhead facilities. 14. Consideration of confined space atmosphere potential. 15. Determination of soil composition and classification.
