Chelsea Turner 5/6 Grade Art Lesson Plan 2nd Observation Zentangle Owls I.

Benchmark/Standard Art: Elements of Art and Principles of Design-Line, Pattern/Repetition, Harmony/Unity, and Contrast Behavioral Objective: The learner will demonstrate through their zentangle illustrations their understanding of line, patter/repetition, harmony/unity, and contrast by the end of week 2. Students will create their own stylized owl illustration by using these elements and principle of design. Anticipatory set: Students will learn the styles and techniques that categorize this style. After looking at demos, examples, and demos, students will use this knowledge to create their own Zentangle Illustration. Although all students are using the same animal and style, students will see how each students identity and style all differ when these illustrations are presented in the halls of the school. Objective/Purpose: This week we will be learning the styles and characteristics of the Zentangle Illustration and will apply them in our own drawings. You will be using different patterns and line to create your own unique owl. The identity and personality of your drawings will shine through even though we are using the same principles and elements. We all have our own unique style! Input a. Task Analysis i. Week 1: Step 1) Introduce the word zentangle. Zentangles are pieces of unplanned, abstract, black and white art created through a very specific Method from an ensemble of simple, structured patterns. This process is a form of artistic meditation, which increases focus and creativity. They are all unique, abstract, elegant pieces of art. ii. Step 2) Explain and demonstrate the characteristics of the Zentangle Method. Show how line, pattern, repetition, harmony/unity, and contrast exist in this method. iii. Step 3) Introduce the Owl Zentangle Project. Show examples of other artists zentangle owls to get inspiration. iv. Step 4) Provide the class with the basic structure of our owl through the drawing demonstration. Students will draw lightly on their white final paper with a pencil so they are able to go in and erase and add elements of their owl to create their own. Adding other details or changing the basic structure will be emphasized. Students will learn that each section of the owl must be filled with a different pattern, which will be demonstrated by me after our basic structure drawing tutorial. If students design an owl with a small amount of section, they will be advised to create more.

v. Step 5) Students must raise their hands to get their owls approved by myself in order to receive their black sharpie marker and start their pattern design. vi. Step 6) Students, once approved of their drawings, will fill in each section with a different pattern. These designs should be intricate, closely spaced, and be done slowly, not rushed. (Students will not get these done in one class period). vii. Week 2: Step 7) Students will continue to work and finish their Zentangle Owl Illustrations. viii. Step 8) Students, once finished, will cut out their owls and paste them on their color of choice construction paper. These illustrations will be displayed in the hallway Week 3. At the beginning of class, all the students and I will visit our illustrations in the hallway and have a mini critic about things students noticed and what we learned from this experience. b. Thinking Levels i. Knowledge: Recognize and understand characteristics of the Zentangle style and method. ii. Comprehension: Use the characteristics of the Zentangle method and apply them in their illustrations. iii. Synthesis: Create a Zentangle Owl Illustration that illustrates the Elements of Art and Principles of Design-Line, Pattern/Repetition, Harmony/Unity, and Contrast. c. Learning Styles i. Visual: Students will be exposed to many examples of the method Zentangles and will understand the characteristics and steps when producing this type of style. Provide the class with examples of Owl Zentangles printables done by other artists to spark inspiration d. Provide a tutorial on the basic structure of our owl e. Show the class that the owls should be broken down into sections and that each section should be filled with a different pattern. f. Show students my teacher example. g. Students get their drawings approved by me in order to move on to the next step.
