Math Literature Lesson Name:__Emily Tittiger Emily Wiest___________ Date:___2/17/2013___ Grade:__4__ Subject/Topic___Geometry/ A Cloak for the Dreamer _______

Objectives: 1. The students will be able to describe how congruent shapes are put together using sides and corners 2. The fourth grade students will be able to choose a strategy to explain how squares, circles, and triangles can be fitted together to form other shapes. 3. The students will be able to create a repeating design of their own, using 2-4 shapes 4. The students will be able to explain their strategy through a writing prompt while demonstrating appropriate writing quality through correct grammar, and punctuation.

Standards: 1. CC.2.3.4.A.1 Draw lines and angles and identify these in two dimensional figures 2. CC.2.3.4.A.2 Classify two dimensional figures by properties of their lines and angles 3. CC.2.3.4.A.3 Recognize symmetric shapes and draw lines of symmetry 4. CC.1.2.4.C Explain events, procedures, ideas or concepts in a text including what happened and why based on specific information in the text

Instructional Materials: 1. A Cloak for the Dreamer by Aileen Friedman, Illustrated by Kim Howard 2. Pattern Blocks 3. Markers/Crayons 4. Glue 5. Brown Paper Bags 6. Construction Paper 7. Writing Link Template 8. Pattern examples

Introduction: Good morning boys and girls! Today, we are going to have to use our imagination. In just a little bit, we are going to become Tailors! Who can tell me what a Tailor is? Has anyone ever gone to a Tailor? A Tailor has a difficult job of making sure to make good quality clothes. We are going to become Tailors soon, but first I would like to share a fun book with you about a Tailor and his three sons called A Cloak for a Dreamer.

Procedures: Read A Cloak for the Dreamer by Aileen Friedman (10 minutes) Discuss the three different strategies used by the characters in the book. Ask questions such as Which cloak would be the most rain/wind resistant? Why will the cloak with the holes not work? How did the tailor and sons fix this cloak? (5 minutes) Show students pictures of different cloaks and discuss which patterns would work and which ones would not make a rain/wind proof cloak (5 minutes) Go over the different shapes with students. Ask students What shapes would you be able to make your own cloak out of? Which shapes would not work as well? (5 minutes) Pass out pattern blocks and allow students to experiment and manipulate the shapes to start making patterns of their own. Go around the room and observe strategies student are using. (5 minutes) Allow students to turn to a partner and review each others geometrical patterns, determining which patterns will work, and which ones will not work (3 minutes) Ask students What types of patterns did you find work? Did you try any patterns that did not work? Why? (5-10 minutes) Explain to students that we will now make our own cloaks for the Archduke (2 minutes) Show students example of completed Archduke with cloak. Ask students Will the Archduke be happy with this cloak? Why or why not? (2 minutes) Explain to students they will have to chose a design/ pattern for the Archdukes cloak (2 minutes) Student will trace 10 pattern blocks consisting of 2-4 shapes on colored construction paper and cut them out to make their patterns (15 minutes) Explain that students will glue the shapes onto the brown paper bag using a pattern/ strategy which will make a cloak that is rain/wind resistant (2 minutes) Give guidelines to students that their cloak must include at least four shapes, must be colorful and must contain a pattern (2 minutes) Pass out brown paper bags (one for each student) (2 minutes) Pass out markers, crayons, glue, pencils, construction paper (2 minutes) Allow adequate time for students to complete their Archduke/cloak (15-20 minutes) Once cloak is completed, pass out writing prompt (2 minutes) Explain to students they are to now pretend they are a Tailor, who has just completed making their first cloak. Students will write to customers explaining why they should want to buy the students cloak. They will be instructed to write what makes their cloak unique, what patterns they used and if it is rain/wind resistant. (2 minutes) Allow time for students to write prompt (15-25 minutes) Once writing prompt is complete ask students to share their ideas with a partner (5 minutes) Staple students writing prompt to their paper bag cloaks to be displayed in the classroom (5

minutes)

Closure: 1. What is the problem with Misha's cloak? (beautiful, but it is full of holes and won't protect the Archduke from the weather) 2. Why does Misha like to visit the bookstore? (he can pour over maps from all over the world and dream of faraway places) 3. What will the Archduke love about Alex' cloak? (made using the Archduke's colors) 4. How does the father show his love and understanding of Misha at the end of the story? (he sees his sons cloak with the colors of maps and circles like the world and realizes his son must travel the world - he gives him permission to go and he and the other two turn Misha's cloak into a good cloak for a dreamer) 5. Where does Misha go at the end of the story? (he will travel the world) 6. What shapes did you use when making your cloak? 7. What pattern or design did you use while making your own cloak?

Assessment/Check for Understanding: 1. Students will be assessed through the evaluation of their patterns/ strategies used to make a cloak 2. Students will be evaluated based on their writing prompts explanation, full sentences, and correct punctuation.

Classroom Management Considerations/UDL 1. 2. 3. 4.

- Adaptations/Considerations:

Use an overhead projector Allow for peer tutor Precut geometrical shapes for students Allow additional time for work to be completed

My Cloak for the Dreamer

You have completed making your first cloak! As a tailor, it is now your job to sell the cloak you made. Below, in paragraph form explain why a customer would want to buy your cloak. Make sure to describe your cloak and explain how you made you it (what patterns were used) and if it would be rain/wind resistant.
