CEOM ON INYLVd bray aoe Li ‘ponunyuog uonoy Ly br NO Siyowvua swalva, TO ALL WHOM I? MAY CONCERN: Be it known that I, Nikola Tesla,of Smiljan Lika, meee analy wh Ralareny mm the Mla of man any, Unlek lake f amanets, Shaheasicrn Border country of Austro Hungary, have Lavented an Improve- mant in Dymamo Blsetrie Uachines of which the following is & specification: = The object of my invention is to provide an im proved msthod for regulating the eurrent on dynamo electric machines. In my improvement I make use of two min brushes to which the ends of ths helices of the field magnets are con- pected and an auxiliary brush and a branch or shunt con= nection from an intermdiats point of the field wire to the avugiliary brush. The relative positions of the reepsctive brushes are varied either automstically or by hand, so that the shunt becomes in-operative when the suriliary brush has @ ¢ertain position upoa the ¢oamutator; but when said auxiliary brush {9 moved in its relation to the min bruahes or tha latter are moved in their relation to the auriliary brush, the electrie condition 1s disturbed and mere or less of the current through the field helices ie diverted through the shunt, or a current passed over sald shunt to the field helices By varying the relative pos= Ation upon the comutator of the respective brushes auto~ matically in proportion to the varying electrics! condition of the working circult the current developed can be regula~ ted in proportion to the demands in the working circuit. Devices for automatically moving the brushes in dynamo electric machines are well knowr, and those mde use of in my machine may be of any dseired or known character. In the drawing: Fig.1 1e 9 diagram 4ilustrating my invention show- ing one core of the field mgnets with one helix wound in the same direction throughout. Pige. 2 and 3 are disgrame showing cne core of the field magnets with a portion of the neli wound in oppos- Ate directions, Pigs. 4 and 6 are disgrame illustrating ths eles trie dsviees that may be employed for automatically adjuet= ing the brushes and Pige 6 is a diagram illustrating the positions of the brushes when she machine 1s being energised on the etart. Pigs. 7, %, 9, 10 and 23 are diagrams that furtmr Allustrate my invention a hereafter described. and b, are positive and negative brushes of the main or working cireuit, and ¢ the auxiliary brush. the working efreuit D, extends from the brushe: amd bas usual Ss, and contains elestrie laups or other devices D-1 either in series or in mltiplelare. M, N-1 represent the ria helices, the ends of which are connected to the min brushew Band by © ‘Ths branch or shunt wire ¢-1 extends from the “ és, EY auxiliary bien ¢ to the Cireuit of the*Field helices a 1s connected to the same at an intermediate point X- 5 represents the commitator with the plates of ordinary con struction. It is now to be understood that when the auxiliary brush ¢.oceupies such a position upon the commutator that the electro-metive force between the brushes ¢ and b as the resistance of the circuit a, M, en}, ¢.A. to the rem sietanee of the efreuit-b, N-1¢ B,the‘potentisle of the pointe X and Y will be equal and no current will flow over the auxiliary bru different position, the potentials of the points X and Y but when thbrush ¢,eccupies « will be different: and a current will flow over the ausil- iary bruslggo or from the conmutator, aécording to thé:rel— ative position of the brushes. By combining with the brushes b, snd ¢ any * » es = known automatic regulating medhaniem, the current develo; can de regulated in proportion to the demande in the work ing eireuit. The parte M and Mel of the field wire may be sound An the same direction, (in this case they are arranged a8 shown in Pig. 1 or the part M may be wind in the oppiaite ) direction as shown in Pigs. 2 and It will be apparent that the respective cores of the field magnets are subjected to the neutralising or in- tensifying effects of the current in tha shunt through ¢-1_ and the maggstiom of the cores will be partially neutralized or the point of grea it magnet L hifted, so that it will be more or less remote from or approaching to, the armature, and hence the aggregate snergising actigns of the fieid magnets on the armature will be corraspondingly varied. In the form indicated in Pig. 1 the regujation is effected “3 Fiee 2 sys = by shifting the point of greatest mgnotism, and in P: a and 3 the same effect 18 produced by the action of the eur- Font im the, ghunt psseiug.through the ngntralising helize In Pige. 4 and 5, Aci, A: holder carrying the main brushes, and Cy the auxiliary brush - e % ~ holder carrying the auxiliary brush. In Fig. 5 instead of a solenoid an iron tube en~ closing a coil is shown. The piston P of the coil is at~ tached to Sith vrusn norders A-2, Acland C. When the brush erted ror adjusting is practically uniform through the whole length of motions The relative positions of the respective brushes may_be varied by moving the auxiliary brush or the brush ¢ may remain quiescent and tho core p be connected to the main brush holder A-1 0 as to adjust the brushes a, b, in thelr relation téthe brush 6. ”~ IF however sf azjustiient ie applied to all the brushes as seen in Fig. 5 the sole= noid should:be conneeted,to both Ac] and C so as to move them towards or away from each other. There are several known devices for giving motion in proportion to an electric current. Y have shown'the moving cords in Figs. 4 aiid as convenient daviess for obtaining the required extent of Extion with vary slight changes in the current passing through the helices, It fe understood that the adjuetmnt of the min in the strength of the eurrést’ independently of the relative position of said brushes to brushes cases variatior the aurilfary brush. In a2] cases the adjustment may be such that Me current £1680 over the au@iiiary vruch wie the dynamo is running with its norml load. E gm avare that guntiiary breapgs have been sea! in connection with the halices of the field wire, but in’ ” these instances the helices received the entire current through the auxiliary or brush or brushes and said brushga; could not be taken Off without breaking the current nea the field. ‘These vrushes caused howaver a great sparking - upon the éSmmutator. ff my improvement the auriiiury prush causes very little or no sparking and can be to” | without breiking the current through the field helices. ;|My improvement-has besides the advantage to facilitate the solf exciting of tra machine in all cases where the rem Sistas:e of the field wire is very great comparatively to the resistanes of thé min‘eireult@at the ‘start, stance on are-Light machines.
