Professional Development: Edmodo Rollout Series 1 of 4

Prepared by: Cynthia Mills Overview and Purpose of Training: This two hour Edmodo presentation is designed for Carson High School staff and administration. As a result of being a recipient of The Race to the Top Grant and the 1:1 initiative, Carson High School staff need to be trained in blended learning instruction and strategies. Edmodo has been determined to be a useful starting point for teachers to incorporate more digital content into their curriculum. In addition, in order to gather relevant data of the interface, staff will be concurrently trained in the Action Research Model and asked to utilize this approach in each department as it pertains to Edmodo. The Action Research approach will be modeled throughout the Edmodo training. Preparation: Prior to the professional development day, staff members will be asked to rate their technology skills. This will be implemented as follows: very knowledgeable and high navigational skills, somewhat knowledgeable and good navigational skills, low knowledge and slow to navigate. This will enabled me to integrate differentiated instruction through grouping. Before the inservice, during the organizational stage of dividing teachers up per their inservice groups, I will assign each participant a color: red, green and yellow. Red represents the low technology skilled teachers, green represents the highly skilled teachers, and yellow represents the somewhat knowledgeable teachers. The seating in the lab will be red, green, yellow; red green yellow, allowing the highly skilled teacher to be in between the other two. The green teachers will be asked to assist the other teachers throughout the instruction so that everyone has the opportunity to keep up with the lesson and the hands-on activities. Also, staff will be asked to listen to my podcast series,How Edmodo Changed my Classroom and write down one thing that interested them or caught their attention about the Podcast. Other Preparation: For the first two trainings, I will be the lead trainer and Cheryl Macy, Carson City School District Implementation Specialist, will assist me. Mrs. Macy has agreed to be trained over the summer, and she has seen this PD plan. Subsequent trainings will include teachers who express interest at the end of session one. This will be determined by asking teachers to respond to a post in the Edmodo classroom at the end of the second hour.. The goal is to establish an Edmodo committee for the year. The committee will meet after school during contract time to learn more about the interface so that members can assist in the next two training sessions and throughout the year. Mrs. Macy and I hope that this rollout generates enthusiasm and the desire by members of the staff to want to learn more and participate in this school wide effort. If staff memeber train, they will receive professional growth credits. Trainees will also receive professional growth credits, but they must attend both subsequent trainings. Where to find this PD Plan: This PD plan will be made available for all teachers on the shared drive. The links have been included next to the instruction for teacher use AFTER the training. The training will not access all these links (though it will access some of the links and video) because of time constraints.

Multimedia used in Presentation: Video, Powerpoint, whiteboard or butcher paper, camera, and Edmodo interface both observational and interactive. Are you interested in being a member of the 2015-2016 Edmodo Committee? 12. Action Research Wrap-up: When staff meet in their PLCs discuss the following Action Research Question: How can I use Edmodo to gather data on the same question in different ways, from different sources, and at different times? Follow-Up: I will set up an additional after school session within the first two weeks to address staff questions and concerns. In addition, in order to ensure that teachers are on Edmodo, evaluators will be asked to access their teachers Edmodo page at least once a month as this training will fall under the professional domain category that states that the employee participated in the school improvement process and implemented school improvement goals. The Edmodo committee will create goals and follow-up strategies to ensure success for all teachers, students, and parents. Edmodo Committee Edmodo Rollout Series 2, 3 and 4: The next three trainings will be offered by the Edmodo committee for professional growth credits for the trainers and the trainees. These trainings will take place after school in the computer lab in the tech center. They will be 1-hour trainings using similar methods as demonstrated in this PD for evaluation and assessment. Each PD lesson will be submitted to Cheryl Macy and myself for approval. The training will incorporate the following, but they are not limited to the following: teach learners how to access the library, import Google Docs, Use the planner and calendar, create quizzes, use badges, and share resources from discovery. The Edmodo committee must submit the dates and times for approval within the first 4 weeks of school, and the trainings must occur during the first semester. Evaluations of the trainings will be created and analyzed by the committee and an analysis will be presented to myself and Mrs. Macy. We will share the results with department chairs, administrators and staff. Further trainings or repeated trainings will be considered for second semester. Additional Support: Department chairs will be asked to email their teachers a self-evaluation within the first month of the Edmodo rollout. This will be done in the form of a survey. This evaluation will be provided by the Edmodo committee and will help identify any emerging issues. The Edmodo committee may need to continue evaluating throughout the year, but this will depend on feedback from administrators, department chairs, peers, and the evaluation itself. Summative Evaluation: Because the Edmodo rollout stakeholders are teachers, students, and parents, I will ask the Edmodo committee to create a summative evaluation at the end of the

year. Through the CHS website, the administration will ask students and parents to participate in a survey. In addition, teachers will receive an end of the year survey. My goal is to gather the information and graph it, sharing the results with the administration and the department chairs.
