Classification of sandstones
There are many different systems of classifying

sandstones, but the most commonly used schemes incorporate both texture (the presence and amount of either interstitial matrixi.e., clasts with diameters finer than 0.03 millimetreor chemical cement) and mineralogy (the relative amount of quartz and the relative abundance of rock fragments to feldspar grains). The system presented here (Figure 4) is that of the American petrologist Robert H. Dott (1964), which is based on the concepts of P.D. Krynine and F.J. Pettijohn.
