Summary of Project: In the first 14 days of January 2014, there were eight school shootings.

On average our nation has seen a school shooting once every two weeks since the Sandy Hook shooting in December 2012. If it can happen at Sandy Hook Elementary, it can happen anywhere, to anyone. On January 8, 2014, there was a threat against our school, resulting in a student being taken into custody. Our school currently practices lockdown drills in classrooms, but we want to be prepared in any situation. For instance, if a school shooting occurred during lunch, an assembly, or even between class periods, there isnt a plan in place. We want to save lives in any mass casualty situation; whether it be a shooting, an earthquake, an explosion, or any emergency situation. We worked extensively with our school police officer, Bingham High School administration, Jordan School District administration, and South Jordan Police and Fire department to prepare a mock school shooting drill. We initially emailed our schools administration who were very enthusiastic about the possibilities of our drill. We developed a proposal that was approved by the administrator of schools. We then created a parent permission slip and began looking for students who would be interested in helping. We recruited our schools drama department to help with the acting and simulating wounds. In the process of looking for students, we began to spread the word; we made daily announcements, sent emails home to all parents, and have been interviewed for an article in our school newspaper. As we talked with people around the school, it became evident that students and staff were uninformed about possible procedures should a mass casualty occur outside of normal class time. Our drill was conducted after school hours and was filmed to be used

as an educational tool that can be shown annually as part of our school safety plan. We have made it clear that everyone in this situation needs to work together as a whole in one of these situations and to be prepared mentally and physically to react and help each other and emergency response in order to minimize loss and save lives. Goals: 1. Help students identify safe zones in a school causalities 2. Promote this to be shown in schools and other places as a educational video 3. Evaluate and identify all school zones for safety 4. Identify threats and hazards, and what you can and cannot touch 5. Demonstrate the difference between lock out and lock in 6. Enable the students and teachers as a whole to act succinctly and precisely with order to get the best possible outcome from one of these situations. 7. Importance of keeping the doors locked, and not propping doors open. 8. Encourage further training in basic first aid and response. 9. We have shared basic knowledge in how to apply basic first aid to use in the case of serious life-threatening situations. We know that in a real situation, whether school violence, or natural disaster, or any mass casualty (By casualty, we mean any serious and possibly life threatening injury. Not necessarily death), it may be hours before we can get the required medical attention needed. 10. Teach about first aid kits and 72-hour kits and other emergency equipment and what you would need and to encourage availability of these things. 11. Encourage everyone to work together for our over all goal, TO SAVE LIVES.
