Topic: Geometry: Shapes

Subject Area: Mathematics

Grade Level: First Grade

Rationale: Shapes are all around us; they are what form our lives. Every building, car, electronic, and animal is built upon varying shapes. nce students are able to identify and sort through the various shapes, they gain two things. !he first is they begin to manipulate shapes in their mind, which helps them begin to sort through ob"ects that are ali#e and not ali#e, which is an important mathematic concept. Many analytical and problem solving s#ills are developed through sorting attributes and testing theories. Students also gain a new perspective about their surroundings when learning about shapes. !hey no longer see windows on a tall s#yscraper as $the wall% but they fit into another category as well: $s&uares.% !his new perspective can be very e'citing for students "ust as it is for us when we discover a new outloo# on life. Standards Primary ((SS.Math.(ontent.).G.*.) +istinguish between defining attributes ,e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided. versus non-defining attributes ,e.g., color, orientation, overall si/e.; build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. ((SS.Math.(ontent.).G.*.0 (ompose two-dimensional shapes ,rectangles, s&uares, trape/oids, triangles, half-circles, and &uarter-circles. or three-dimensional shapes ,cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders. to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape. Secondary ((SS.E1*-1iteracy.S1.).) 2articipate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. ((SS.E1*-1iteracy.S1.).)a Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions ,e.g., listening to others with care, spea#ing one at a time about the topics and te'ts under discussion.. ((SS.E1*-1iteracy.3.).0 3rite informative4e'planatory te'ts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. Unit Focus: COGNITIVE - Knowledge & Reasoning
Principles: Shapes and shape attributes Elements: number of sides, number of corners Find and create shapes and describe them through speaking, listening, and writing

Performance Goals: ). Given the shapes: triangle, he'agon, trape/oid, 5 pentagon , students will label and count the number of corners and sides. Students will meet the performance standard by correctly labeling each shape. 0. Given shape manipulatives, students will build and create bigger shapes. Students will meet the performance standard by using three or more shapes when building. 6. Given a shape hunt activities, students will wal# around the school and find shapes, students will meet the performance standard by finding four or more shapes around our school. 30 *shley Farrens, Geometry 7nit, Spring 08)9 2age

9. Given cut outs of our nine shapes, students will create and ob"ect that can :help us.; Students will meet the performance standard by creating a shape and correctly labeling the shapes used and the number of corner and sides in their ob"ect. .verarc$in' ,ssential /uestion0s1: <ow do shapes define the world around usB (an we find simple shapes in the world around usB Topical 2oci: (reating and manipulating shapes to ma#e bigger ob"ects.
