‘The onset of information and communications technology
(ICT) and consequently the era of e-commerce put
pressure to industries already bearing the effects of trade
liberalization. Competition has become sti, not only
among businesses within the country but also with those
foreign businesses whose access to the local market has.
been made easy.
Considering the effects of these borderless trade
transactions to the local industries and to the economy in,
general, the Philippine Government, in an effort to protect
said industries and maintain their ‘competitiveness, has
‘approved the E-Commerce Bill that placed the ICT sector
at the forefront of the country’s development. Along this
line, the Administration of Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
has placed the ICT as one of its major thrusts and given
priority to take advantage of the present prospects in the
knowledge-based industries.
With these developments at hand, the Albay SMED
Council has embarked on an activity that supports not only
the government's thrust to develop the ICT sector, but that
benefits the SMEs and the consumers as well, thus, the
conduct of the INFOTEK SHOW starting in year 2000 in,
Legazpi City.
Considering the growing impact of the activity towards the
development of the local ICT Industry, starting in year
2006, the stewardship of the activity has been reliquished
to the Albay ICT Association (AICTA), Inc., a group
organized by the Albay SMED Council and was tasked to
promote the development of the local ICT Industry.
‘Toward this end the local ICT stakeholders lead by the
AICTA and the Legazpi ICT Council (L.CICT) implemented
various programs and projects to promote the growth and
development of the local ICT industry. As a result of these
initiatives, Legazpi City has been recognized by the
Commission on Information and —Communcations
Technology (CICT) as one of the country’s Next Wave
Cities for ICT business.
