the Mind The author of this article is Gerd Gigerenzer. His article is entitled '' Outsourcing the Mind'', which was written in 1989. The author's central idea is mainly about our minds and how technology has changed our thinking and how it has affected our minds positively and negatively when wanting to find new information. Gigerenzer (1989), in his article started telling about his experience in fall 1989 at the Center of Advanced Study when there was no technology in his personal office at all. The author believes that not having technology in the offices was a very useful situation because it just made people depend on their brains to find a solution for their problems. Next, the author describes the situation of people in the meantime and how technology has affected their daily lives and how it has become the most essential among the other inventions. Gigerenzer believes that using the internet actively can change our way of thinking. He explains that the internet affects our inside thinking because it just gives us faster access to information. After that, the author moved on and started discussing other types of invention, which are writing and the printing press. He agrees that writing has made our lives better because it can allow us to compare texts, and it can make accuracy possible. The author assures that writing can make long-term memory less important than it was which is why schools have replaced the memorization skill by practicing more reading and writing. The author asserts that our minds cannot memorize long folktales and songs, which is the reason that leads people to refer to outside sources when they need new information. On the other hand, the author still agrees that although there are some downsides for using the internet as an outside source, it has taught us new skills for accessing information. Finally, he concludes his article by pointing out that technology has become the alternative for our minds, which means we just refer to it whenever it is the time to think of something. He believes that our minds will keep depending on technology until a new technology appears and replaces this situation. In the future, he hopes people will learn how to outsource other cognitive abilities such as, language, perception, and attention.
