James Akashi MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed

in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The vinegar will flow through the membrane. The vinegar is made up of 95% water while the egg is only 74% water making the vinegar able to pass through. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 4 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.2 15.8 16.3 LIQUID LEVEL (mL) 300 mL 240 mL 290 mL OBSERVATIONS bubbles 50 mL displacement egg floating egg was yellow see the membrane

In this lab we were investigating osmosis using an egg by putting a raw egg in a cup with vinegar and water and wait for a period of time to watch it expand. The egg expanded because the water molecules move from a high concentration area to a low concentration area, through ad selectively permeable membrane. It started at 13.2 cm and ended at 16.3 cm, expanding 3.1 cm. Our groups egg expanded 0.4 cm more than the grades average and 0.5 cm more than the classs average. My hypothesis was correct because I thought that the water molecules would move into the egg. ANALYSIS 1. The egg shell dissolved because the vinegar has an acid giving it the ability to break things down. Because of that, we could see the selectively permeable membrane. 2. The difference was 3.6 cm. The rate of Group 7s egg was 0.275 cm per day compared to the rate of Group 3s egg which was 1.125 cm per day. 3. Cells need water in order to survive. If they have too little, theyre going to shrivel. If they have too much, theyre going to burst.
