Zack Gordon 10/11/13 1 Modeling Osmosis MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when

a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for 4 days, then the water will flow from the vinegar across the membrane into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to and area with low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The water molecules will flow into of the egg. This is true because the vinegar is made up of 95% water and the egg is 74% water so there is a lower concentration in the egg. Therefore the egg has less water inside so the water wants to travel from a high concentration (the vinegar) to a low concentration (the egg). PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. CONCLUSION In this lab, we were investigating if water would travel from a high concentration area of water (the vinegar) to a low concentration area of water (the egg). Over the course of 4 days our egg expanded 2.6 cm. The egg expanded 2.6 cm because the water travel from a high concentration of 95% water to a lower concentration of 74% water into the egg through a selectively permeable membrane. This is true because the water level in the beaker decreased 100 ml, therefore the

Zack Gordon 10/11/13 1 Modeling Osmosis water had to have travel into the egg. The water did this because when the diffusion of water is happening the water wants to travel to a low concentration area, which was the egg. I hypothesized that the water would travel into to egg. My hypothesis was right. ANALYSIS The eggshell dissolved because the vinegar (weak acid) travels through a selectively permeable membrane into the egg and the weak acid dissolves the calcium-carbonated shell of the egg. The difference between the two eggs that were given to us was 3.4. The rate of the egg growth for egg number one was 1.125 cm per day. For egg number two the growth per day was 0.275. The two eggs got different results because maybe one of the eggs shells dissolved quicker than the other one allowing in more water molecules than the other one. Cells need water because water helps keep the cell in it normal shape. Also cells need water because it helps them transport nutrition and waste to other cells and other parts of the same cell.
