1 MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days, then the water will flow from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through the membrane causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The egg contains 74% water and the vinegar contains 95%. Since the egg has a lower concentration of water, the water will flow from the vinegar into the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 3 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14 cm 15cm 16 cm LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 250 ml (300 ml with the egg in) 200 ml (300 ml with the egg in) 190 ml (290 ml with the egg in) OBSERVATIONS Bubbles on shell 50 ml displacement Egg on bottom Absorbed 50 ml Expanded 1 cm Shell partially dissolved Shell completely dissolved Egg absorbed 60 ml Expanded 1 cm

TOTAL EXPANSION GROUP #4 = 2.0 cm AVERAGE EXPANSION CLASS = 2.6 cm AVERAGE EXPANSION (7th GRADE)= 2.7 cm 100% of the eggs (39) tested expanded.

CONCLUSION In this lab we were investigating osmosis by putting a raw egg into 250ml of vinegar. On day 1, the circumference of the egg was 14 cm, and the water level without the egg was 250 ml. Over the course of 3 days, the egg expanded 2 cm, absorbed 60 ml, and its shell dissolved. Group #4s egg expanded 0.7 cm less than the average expansion of the 7th grade. 100% of the 39 eggs tested expanded.

Julia Merron 10/4/13 Sci. 1 ANALYSIS 1. The chemical reaction of calcium carbonate and weak acid caused the eggshell to dissolve. The water molecules then passed through the selectively permeable membrane of the egg and caused it to expand. 2. Many different things couldve made group three and seven have different results. They couldve gotten the eggs at different times, the eggs could have been placed differently, one egg couldve been out of the jar longer than the other, or they couldve been raised differently. 3. Cells need water because many cellular processes depend on osmosis, and osmosis cant happen without water. If there is no water there is no osmosis, and no osmosis equals no cells.
