MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar and into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days the water will flow into the egg because the acid in the vinegar will dissolve the egg shell, leaving space for the water to flow in. Also the egg is 74% water, while the vinegar has 95% water, giving the higher concentrated vinegar a better chance of flowing into the egg and also dissolving the eggshell. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.0 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300ml OBSERVATIONS 50ml displaced Bubbles are rising

CONCLUSION In this lab we were testing which way would water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar. The vinegar had a higher concentration of 95% water than the egg, which had a lower concentration with 74% water. This caused osmosis to occur across the selectively permeable membrane making the water molecules from the vinegar flowed into the egg and dissolve the eggshell. In period 7, Group 5s egg displaced 2.0cm, which was .7cm below the class average 2.7cm. My hypothesis was that the water would flow from the vinegar and into the egg. My hypothesis was correct.

ANALYSIS 1. When and egg and its shell are soaked in vinegar (weak acid,) and the acid reacts at the calcium-carbonated eggshell and causes the eggshell to dissolve. The selectively permeable membrane allows the water to pass through with the vinegar to complete the chemical reaction. 2. The difference in the groups 3 and 7 expansion was 3.4cm. The discrepancy was that both groups expansion were far above/below the average and yet in the same period so far apart in expansion. A possibility in why these two expansions were so far apart was they couldve been measured wrong or a procedure couldve been executed incorrectly. 3. Cells need water for multiple reasons. Water transports nutrients to cells and waste products out, water helps carry out functions, and water keeps the size and shape of a cell.
