MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I think the water is going to flow into the egg from the vinegar because the vinegar has a high concentration of 95% of water than the egg, which has a low concentration of 74% of water. This is why water goes into the egg. It travels through the membrane and into the egg, and this would then cause the egg to expand. It shows a chemical reaction. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 OBSERVATIONS 50 ml displaced Evidence of a chemical reaction from the bubbles on the service/shell of the egg Liquid level without the egg is 200 ml Gas bubbles on egg No shell left on the egg Liquid level was 200ml without the egg in water Squishy

CONCLUSION In this lab we studied the process of osmosis using an egg and vinegar. We left an egg in a jar for 4 days. During this time the water molecules in the area of high concentration flowed through the selective permeable membrane and into the area of low concentration

(the egg). In all, our groups eggs circumference began at 13.5cm and increased 4.0cm to the measurement of 17.5cm by day 4. In period 4, the average expansion of the class was 3.0cm. The average expansion of group 4 increased 1.0cm more compared to the average expansion of the class. The average expansion in all of 7th grade was 2.7cm. In my hypothesis, the raw egg was placed in vinegar (water) for four days, and the water molecules flowed into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. In conclusion, my hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS In the course of 4 days, we learned about osmosis by putting a raw egg into vinegar (water). The chemical reaction caused the eggshell to dissolve due to the fact that the eggshell is made up of calcium carbonate and the vinegar is made of weak acid, and then CO2 is formed. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. The difference of expansion between these two groups is 3.4cm. The rate (distance/time) between these two groups is 1.125cm.
