Instructor: Megan Dunn Lesson Title: Going to the Store Curriculum Area: Counseling and Guidance Standards Connection:

Grade Level: 6-8th Date: 11/20/13 Estimated Time: 30 minutes

83.) PS:A1.6 - Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behavior Learning Objective: Me and C: The students will identify and categorize inappropriate and appropriate behaviors while gardening when given a file folder game, with the help of an aid. D, Ma, L, K, S, J: The students will identify and categorize inappropriate and appropriate behaviors while gardening with the use of a file folder game with 75% accuracy. H, M, Z: The students will identify and categorize inappropriate and appropriate behaviors while gardening on a T-chart with 75% accuracy. IEP goal: The students will use fine motor skills (Mercedes and Corna) The students will engage and respond appropriately when given a task

Modifications: The use of Aids for Mercedes and Corna The use of pictures for Deshawn, Matt, Leslie, Korey, Seth, and Jody. The use of file folder game for Mercedes, Corna, Deshawn, Matt, Leslie, Korey, Seth, and Jody. The examples from the lesson will still be on the board for Haleigh, Maren, and Zack to copy down.

Evaluation of Learning Objective: Me and C: The students will identify inappropriate and appropriate behaviors while gardening with the use of a file folder game. There will be pictures and descriptions of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors that they will have to correctly place under the inappropriate or appropriate category. They will use an Aid to help them read and identify the behavior as well as support to place them correctly. D, Ma, L, K, S, J: The students will identify and categorize inappropriate and appropriate behaviors while using a file folder game that has pictures and descriptions of the behaviors. They will have to identify and place six out of the eight, in the correct behavior category. H, M, Z: The students will identify and categorize inappropriate and appropriate behaviors on a pre made T-chart that will be given to them. They will write six out of eight behaviors down under the correct category to pass. The behaviors will be written on the board for

them to look at and choose from. Engagement: Teacher: Today we will be learning about gardening and what to do when we garden. Does anyone know what a garden is? Wait for student response. Correct, a garden is where you grow plants. Can someone raise your hand and tell me where you have seen a garden before? Call on student with hand raised and wait for student response to be the school garden. Great Job! The school does have a garden and we even have our own garden. Does anyone remember what we grown in our garden? Wait on student response if they are not responding call on a student. Yes, that is right! We grow herbs in our garden. Now we are going to talk about how we got planted those herbs and what we behaviors are right and wrong while gardening. Design for Learning: I. Teaching:

Teacher: Remember when you planted those herbs we had to do several things to make them grow? First when you garden you need to dig up the dirt. Can someone tell me what we had to do next? Wait for student response and if not responding begin to prompt them. That is right! We had to put the seed in the whole that we dug up. Then we had to water them and make sure they were getting sunlight. Great Job class! Well when we garden there are a lot of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors. On a poster I will the words inappropriate and appropriate with their definitions. Do see this poster? It has two words: Appropriate (Point to the word) and inappropriate (point to the word). The word appropriate means, the right or the correct way to do something and the word inappropriate means the wrong or not right way to do something. So knowing that, do you think that hitting someone is appropriate or inappropriate? Have the students refer to the poster and call on someone. Correct, hitting someone is inappropriate. There are a lot of appropriate and inappropriate ways to act while we are gardening. II. Opportunity for Practice:

On the Promethean board, I will have a T-chart with the two categories: appropriate and inappropriate. There will also be pictures with descriptions. I will read the behaviors and call on students to come to the board to place the behavior and picture under the correct category. Teacher: This is a chart we are going to make of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors while gardening. I am going to do the first one to show you. Point to the picture while reading the behavior. The first behavior is wearing tennis shoes. I know that wearing tennis shoes is appropriate so I am going to drag it under the appropriate category. I know this because appropriate means the right or correct way to do something and we need to protect our feet while gardening. Now it is your turn. The next behavior is hitting people with the shovel. Point the picture while reading the behavior. Do you think this is an

appropriate behavior or inappropriate? If you do no remember what appropriate or inappropriate means you can look on this poster to find out. Call on a student to come to the board and drag it to the correct category. Fantastic! I like the way you remembered what inappropriate means. Yes, hitting people with a shovel is a wrong choice to make. Point to the next picture while reading the behavior. What about washing your hands after you garden? Call on a student to come to the board and drag it to the correct category. Correct, washing our hands is an appropriate behavior because we need to get the dirt off that we just touched in the garden. Point to the next picture while reading the behavior. The next behavior is eating the plants. Is this appropriate or inappropriate? Call on a student to come to the board and drag it to the correct category. Great job! That is inappropriate because we can never eat a plant we find in the garden unless our teacher tells us it is safe. Point to the next picture while reading the behavior. The next behavior is watering the plants. Is this appropriate or inappropriate? Call on a student to come to the board and drag it to the correct category. Awesome! I like the way you remembered what we talked about earlier and how plants need water so it is the right thing to do which makes it appropriate. Point to the next picture while reading the behavior. Is throwing dirt appropriate or inappropriate? Call on a student to come to the board and drag it to the correct category. That is right! Throwing dirt is inappropriate because it is the wrong thing to do because the dirt is supposed to stay on the ground and we do not throw things at our friends. Point to the next picture while reading the behavior. Is using a shovel correctly not to hit people appropriate or inappropriate? Call on a student to come to the board and drag it to the correct category. Correct! We need to use a shovel to dig up dirt to plant our seed so it is an appropriate behavior when we use it correctly and do not hit others with it. Point to the next picture while reading the behavior. The last behavior is walking on plants. Is this appropriate or inappropriate? Call on a student to come to the board and drag it to the correct category. You guys are so smart! That is right it is inappropriate to walk on plants because you will step on them and they will die. Great job finding out the inappropriate and appropriate behaviors I knew you could do it! I will read the list of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors again. III. Assessment:

Teacher: Now that we know the inappropriate and appropriate behaviors we are going to put them in the correct category at our desks. I will go around and pass out the materials and explain to each group of students what they will be doing. Me and C: The students will identify inappropriate and appropriate behaviors while gardening with the use of a file folder game.

The behaviors will be written on the board for them to look at and choose from. IV. Closure:

Teacher: You all did so well today! I am so proud. Can anyone tell me one appropriate behavior for gardening? Wait for student to respond with an appropriate behavior. Great job! I can tell you were listening today. Can someone tell me one inappropriate behavior while gardening? Wait for student to respond with an inappropriate behavior. You all are so smart! Thank you for listening and doing your work today so well!! Differentiation Strategies: H-The students can create and think of more appropriate and inappropriate behaviors while gardening and add them to their lists. L- The use of an Aid will be given to them as well as prompting and reading the behaviors out loud to them. Materials and Resources: Poster board Flipchart Promethean board File folder game T-chart Pencils

Reflection: I thought this lesson went really well. The students were actively engaged throughout the lesson. Ms. Stewart warned me that they would not be talkative and I would have to prompt them with questions in order to get responses. However, this was not the case. The students opened up right away and really seemed interested in what I was talking about. They loved the fact that I related it to a store they knew and right when they saw the picture they knew what I was talking about. They also got excited when I got to share with them that they were going to the store and Chic Fil A. I think the technology in this lesson was extremely helpful for making it engaging and keeping the students attention throughout. They loved coming to the board and dragging the different behaviors to the correct side of the board. It was also very beneficial that I used pictures along with the behaviors because I could tell that they were grasping it based on the pictures. The assessment part of the lesson I thought was right on target with their abilities. The students that had file folders

seemed to have understood the concept and loved the fact that they were able to complete the task. The students that had to write down the different behaviors were also allowed to draw their own pictures or the pictures they saw on the board and they loved that freedom. All in all, I think this lesson went very well and I would not change anything if I were to teach it again.
