Collaborated with 3rd grade team, bilingual team, reading specialist/interventionist, as well as learning behavior specialists on data and ways to increase student growth. Planned literacy nights to increase parental involvement in the school environment as well as motivating students to a love of reading. Worked with bilingual team to plan and organize monthly bilingual parent meetings that focused on a specific topic of interest to increase parental involvement in their childs education. Jr./Sr. Scholars Urban Education Summer Internship: 1st grade Teacher June -July 2011 North Central College, Naperville, IL Taught a classroom of rising 1st grade students, five days a week from East Aurora and Chicago in reading, writing, mathematics, and science that centered around a thematic unit. Prepared students for program events such as Forensics Speech Competition by facilitating lessons as students scripted, performed, and recorded their unique commercials advertising their own homemade toothpaste. Collaborated and communicated with parents/ guardians in Spanish and English via phone, newsletters, parent visit days as well as individualized behavior charts on student progress. Maintained a positive classroom atmosphere by utilizing effective classroom management techniques such as implementing consistent routines, practicing efficient transitions, providing resource visual tools around the classroom, and employing positive reinforcement through daily celebrations of student work in order to motivate student learning. 2nd grade General Education Cowlishaw Elementary, Aurora, IL (Indian Prairie District 204) Mar.-Jun. 2011 Implemented hands-on language arts lessons that promoted active literacy through Smartboard technology.
