Lesson Title: Arctic/Polar Animals

Lesson Overview
Description This lesson will address the seasons, more specifically winter and the Arctic animals. This lesson is designed for kindergarten students and will be instructed in English. The purpose of this lesson plan is to familiarize students with the Arctic animals and how they are able to survive in such cold climates. Moreover, this lesson is designed for a classroom consisting of approximately 20 students and will take approximately one hour and forty minutes to complete. Students will have access to visual aids and technology to support their learning about the animals, more specifically Arctic animals (assuming the school has access to technological resources and devices. In addition, both formative and summative assessment will be used to evaluate the students. Grade Levels (Cycle) Prerequisite Knowledge Kindergarten Key Concepts Basic knowledge of the Winter season (i.e, weather, temperature)

To briefly introduce/familiarize students with Arctic/Polar animals

The students should be able to: 1. Name at least one animal that lives in the Arctic/Polar region 2. Briefly explain how Arctic animals survive 3. To demonstrate their knowledge by completing a mini art activity

Specific Key Questions (KSU) & Considerations

Where can we find Arctic animals? (i.e., land, ocean, which part of the world) What is special about Arctic/Polar animals? Name an animal that hibernates in the Winter. How do Arctic/Polar animals survive in such cold climates? Understand that the Arctic is a polar region ( cold area) Competency 1: To perform sensorimotor actions effectively in different contexts In this lesson, students will engage in an art activity and the activity itself will require the students to use their fine motor skills Competency 2: To affirm his/her personality In this lesson, students will share their interests and feelings concerning Arctic animals and show autonomy when carrying out their art project. Competency 3: To interact harmoniously with others In this lesson, students will be required to act harmoniously and cooperate appropriately with one another. Competency 4: To communicate using the resources of language In this lesson, students will be required to convey their thoughts (produce a message) and understand what is being conveyed to them. Competency 5: To construct his/her understanding of the world In this lesson, students will be required to show interest in science and the Animal Kingdom and will also be asked to apply their knowledge of Arctic Animals to an art activity. Competency 6: To complete an activity or project In this lesson, students will be asked to participate in an art activity and show tenacity when carrying out this part project.

Classroom Organization/Layout

The children will be invited to sit on the classroom mat during the lesson. While the teacher is reading to the students, generating discussion and viewing the video, the children will be sitting on the classroom mat. Having all the students sit on the mat will allow the teacher to keep an eye on all students to ensure that they are paying attention and focusing; this is also done to prevent the students from having their backs to the teacher as the teacher is carrying out the lesson. Once the students are ready to begin their art activity, they will be asked to return to their seats. The classroom consists of 4 tables, with 5 students sitting at each table.

Advanced Work/Enrichment If students complete their assignments faster than anticipated, the students will be asked to work in the Winter workbook. Children will be provided with an anchoring activity, more specifically a booklet pertaining to the Winter season and the Arctic. The booklet will include coloring pages, mix and match pages, letter and number games relating to Winter and the Arctic/Polar regions, gamelike activities and stencils, pictures and random facts about the Arctic and Arctic/Polar animals. The booklet will be used as a means to keep the students busy while the other students complete their work. However, the activities and sheets in the booklet will be meaningful and will be used to promote and reinforce learning.

Lesson Plan Outline


Introduction (10min ) The teacher will introduce the lesson by showing children flash cards of Arctic animals. The teacher will let the students view the flash cards for no longer than three (3) seconds. When the teacher has finished showing the class the flash cards, he/she will engage in a game of charades, whereby they will be required to imitate arctic animals (i.e., penguin, polar bear, whale). Based on the flashcards they have seen and the teachers imitation of Arctic/Polar animals, the students will be asked to guess what the lesson is going to be about. Show children flashcards of Arctic/Polar animals Show for no longer than 3 seconds ( done to build the mystery) Play charades: Act out and mime Arctic/Polar animals (i.e., penguin, polar bear, whale) If students cannot guess what the teacher is acting out / imitating, the teacher is permitted to use sounds. Give students several minutes to talk to one another and guess what the lesson is going to be about. Arctic/Polar Art Activity : Students will engage in an Arctic/Polar art activity where they will be required to draw/color their favorite Arctic/Polar animal and name one activity that this particular animal engages in.

To have student apply their knowledge of the Arctic and Polar regions/animals by means of an art activity

The students should be able to : Name their favorite Arctic/Polar animal Name one characteristic/ac tivity that this particular animal engages in ( by referring to book and video) Complete an art activity

Conclusion (approximately 5 min )

To summarize the lesson, the teacher will dress up as an Arctic Fairy and will call upon willing students with her magic wand. The students will be asked to discuss what they knew about Arctic/Polar animals prior to this lesson (i.e., referring to initial brainstorm and cluster). We will also discuss what we have learned together during the lesson (brief re-cap) and mention what we would like to further investigate at a later date.

Formative Assessment Strategies:

By means of the instructors observations, the instructor will observe : Student participation (i.e, sharing ideas/thoughts, listening to teacher and peers) Student engagement (i.e, paying attention, completing art activity) Students willingness to learn Behavior The students art activity will be assessed since it primarily allows the students to express their creativity and apply their knowledge of Arctic/polar animals. Their art assignment will demonstrate their knowledge. ** This art activity will then be placed in their portfolio ** A check-list will be provided for the teacher to assess the students work ( Appendix 2)

Students will be able to assess themselves by asking the following questions: - Did I participate in todays lesson?
