3. Why you should study carbonates..not a question, but a statement

Introduction
1. Why carbonate is a nightmare 2. Why carbonate is a sweetdream

Why carbonate is a nightmare

Exploration
Seismic looks homogeneous and hard to interpret seismic facies Well log only representative in one column Heterogeneity vertically and spatially Outcrop properties different from subsurface properties. We can only imagine what is happening offshore. Stoiip calculation?? To fix a porosity value is a challenge

Why carbonate is a nightmare

Production
Mud loss because of vugs or caverns Irregular depths of oil water contact depending on pore distribution effecting capillary pressure Windward facies very dense and hard to penetrate.. Need proper drilling plan If the facies is tight then it is ridiculously tight If facies is soft then it is ridiculously soft cave in Easily subject to diagenesis.. Be careful of what type of mud you are using and control the temperature of the drill area

Why carbonate is a sweet dream

Exploration
Locally and widely distributed. Good gross thickness We know where to find it.. Because it is specially found in warm environment Often associate with type 1and 2 source rock.. best & good quality

QAB2033 Carbonate Sedimentology & Stratigraphy/Dr. Bernard Pierson

Production
Gold mine.. Plenty of oil and gas accumulation Natural trap configuration
