UNIT: We Built a Zoo Lesson Plan Week 2 Monday Introduction to Square roots/Work Day Learning Target: To find any

ny remaining information needed to further work on the blueprints and to gain an understanding of what square roots are as well as their application (CCSS 8.EE.A.2) Warm up Students will be shown an 11x11 grid that is an example blueprint for a cage. I will ask them what the area of that cage is. They should easily be able to tell me 121 square units. Next, I will draw a square and tell them it has an area of 144 square units. If that is the case, then what is the length of one of its sides? I will ask them to discuss this with their shoulder partner. I will walk around and listen to what groups are coming up with, and bring the class back together for discussion when it seems the majority of the class has the answer (Think-Pair-Share). From here, I will ask if anyone can tell me a simple way to get 12 from 144. Hopefully someone will come up with taking the square root, because they should have at least heard of it before. If not, I will introduce it. We will do a few more problems like this. This is a nice way of seeing a square root as undoing a square. Students will now get into their zoo groups in which they will each have a computer to do any further research on the animals they have chosen for their blueprints. Return the blueprints back to the groups who had already started working on them Hand out Blueprint Specifications As groups are finishing, they are to begin working on their blueprints. Dimensions must be labeled on the drawings. Have students work until the end of the class period. Collect blueprint drafts.
