Maryn Observed January 30th-February 13th English and Language Arts

Core Standard 1: Word Recognition, Fluency, and Vocabulary Development Demonstrates Awareness of Sounds
On February 11th, Maryn was rated a 4-5 for her ability to demonstrate awareness of sound. When asked what words start with the same letter as her name, she said, Milo, Miller, and mat. She was able to match the sounds of her own name with another word or name. Also, I asked Maryn to rhyme a word with cat and Maryn. She replied with the words nat and Erin. Maryn is not yet able to distinguish sounds within words or the beginning or ending sounds of a word, but she is able to identify sounds that she hears around her. On February 11th, I asked Maryn, What do you hear when you go outside? Maryn said, stomping feeling, cats meowing, and the sound of wind. Also, at lunch on February 11th, Ellie was about to leave and Maryn said, Bye, Ellie belly.

Demonstrates Awareness of Symbols


For Maryns ability to demonstrate the awareness of symbols, she was rated a 4. On February 6th, Maryn was able to write her name in order. Also, she was able to write the alphabet with little help. She needed a reminder on how to write the letter g and q. Also, Maryn was asked to read some of her friends names from the wall. She was able to recognize other names and the first capital letter of their name. Then, letters were written out for Maryn in capital and lower case form. Maryn was asked to match the common letters. She was successfully able to match all of the letters together.

Core Standards 2&3: Reading Informational and Literary Text Uses Print for Pleasure and Information

Maryn is rated as the level 5 KG Standard chooses reading activities for meaning. On February 11th, Maryn requested to find the book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Maryn and Ellie searched in Mrs. Stanleys office for the book. During naptime, Maryn reads through the books that she is given and is able to explain the books to her friends based on the pictures. Fiona and Lily ask to sit by Maryn during naptime so Maryn can read the stories to them.

Comprehends Details, Events, and Main Ideas


Maryn is rated at the level 6 (1st grade standard.) On February 11th, Maryn read to Lily. While looking at the pages, Maryn would talk about what she believed the book was saying. For the picture below, Maryn said, People are supposed to pick up bunnies from their necks and not their butts. Also, after Maryn is read to during circle time, she is able to comprehend the story and answer questions asked. She was able to respond to the questions, How does the elephant eat? and Where will the elephant go next?

Core Standards 4&5: Writing Informational and Literary Text Writing for a Specific Purpose and Audience
Maryn is at level 3 for this standard. On February 6th, Maryn was on the floor writing on her picture. The writing was scribbles. I asked Maryn what she was writing and she

replied, I am telling how to get to the treasure. Also, Maryn was asked to tell about her pictures and her description was written. Her descriptions of the pictures were told through 2-3 sentences and detailed.

Core Standard 6: English Language Conventions Uses Writing Implements


Maryn is between level 4 and the KG Standard. On February 11th, Maryn was able to draw numbers and letters. She was also able to write her letters from left and right with the correct spacing. Also, Maryns letters were shaped correctly and in the write direction.

Core Standard 7: Listening and Speaking Demonstrates Receptive Language


Maryn is at level 4. Maryn is able to follow directions, but on February 15th, Maryn was unable to listen to her teachers words repetitively. During naptime, she was asked to lie on her mat quietly. Miss Baker had to come out numerous times because Maryn was

unable to follow these directors. However, Maryn understands the directions during circle time. On February 15th, before circle time, Maryn looked at Lily and said, Lily, it is time to put our books away. Mrs. Stanley wants the books away before we begin circle time. Maryn washes and dries her hands before snack and lunch without needing reminders. Also, Maryn asked for clarification if she does not understand what is being asked of her.

Demonstrates Expressive Language


On February 11th, Maryn was rated a 7, which is the 1st grade standard. Maryn was asked about her last vacation and she said, When I went to California, I went to the beach. Where we were, it was not a hotel, but like a house. I was the closest to the beach. Let me think. I saw my aunt there. We went there to see my aunt. When asked additional questions about this vacation, Maryn was able to respond to these through correctly formed sentences. She also stayed on topic while discussing her vacation. Maryn is able to affectively communicate with her teachers, parents, and peers.
