Lesson/Activity Plan Template Teacher Candidate _________________Paige Leuthold________________________________ Name of Lesson _____Plotting Ordered Pairs ____________________________________ Subject ____Mathematics_____________________ Grade __4th__________________ Rationale for lesson: Plotting ordered pairs is an essential skill for future lessons in graphing. Graphing is an essential skill that students will use throughout their studies of mathematics. Graphs are also part of other subjects and in the real world. Students need to be able to accurately interpret the information that is displayed.

Learning outcomes: The students will plot ordered pairs.

Assessment of student outcomes: Students will be assessed based upon participation and teacher observation. Students will also be assessed on the correct plotted points on the student worksheet handed out at the end of the lesson.

Related Foundations/Indiana Academic Standard: MA.4.6 2000 - Data Analysis and Probability Students organize, represent, and interpret numerical and categorical data and clearly communicate the findings. They show outcomes for simple probability situations. Materials Needed: Masking tape Pencil Paper Ordered Pair worksheet Lesson/Activity Presentation: Anticipatory set: Before the students arrive (before school, during a special, or during

lunch), use the masking tape to tape off quadrant I on a large area of the classroom or even hallway if necessary. Tape off the hashes on each axis. When the students arrive have them gather in a circle and tell them that they are going to be doing some moving.

Teaching procedures: Explain that an ordered pair is two numbers written in a certain order. It is usually written in parentheses like this: (4,5). It can be used to show the position on a graph, where the "x" (horizontal) value is first, and the "y" (vertical) value is second. Walk horizontal 4 hashes and then up 5 hashes and place a piece of tape labeled (4, 5).

Guided and Independent Practice: Give each student an ordered pair to plot on the floor graph. Students will then return to his/her seat and complete an ordered pair worksheet for reinforcement of concepts. Be available to answer questions and help students if needed. Closure: Collect the students worksheet and announce to the class that they will be using these skills similar to these in the future. Differentiated instruction: For lower level students, chose level-appropriate points to plot. Reduce the amount of points needed to plot on the worksheet. For excelling students, have them plot positive and negative points after explaining that negatives go left and down.
