Lesson Planning Format

(Revised 2014)

Teachers Name: Allison Beres Grade: Elementary General Music (Gr. 3-5)
Plan: what learners will o be able to do (behavioral objective)

Date: April 12, 2014 Title of Lesson: Green Eggs and Jam!
Partner: (Honor THEIR world by beginning with an experience students
bring to the classroom. Include time for collaboration through sharing and dialogue.)

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to create their own patter song with rhythmic variation using Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham with a success rate of 90%.
o understand (cognitive objective)

The students will be asked to recall their favorite Dr. Seuss book (volunteers will be asked to read out loud). A discussion will follow on why that is their favorite and what they like most about it (funny words, rhyming, fast pace, etc.).
Present: (Sequence of the lesson steps. Take the learning from THEIR
world to the world of the classroom. Present the information and allow time for students to practice. Engage critical thinking, problem posing and problem solving.)

The student can apply improvisation skills on a given context and gain an understanding of musical form.
o encounter (experiential objective)

Students will create their own patter song using classroom instruments and a familiar childrens poem.
o perceive differently (critical objective)

Students will realize the role of music in enhancing the expressivity of poetry.

Focusing Question: In what ways will students (complete the sentence)

1. The class will stand in a circle and do the O Passo step to a steady, slightly fast tempo in common time. 2. The teacher will read a few lines from Green Eggs and Ham in a steady eighth note pattern. (I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-am.) 3. Introduce the term patter song and some of its qualities (fast pace, tricky/ silly text) and explain that we will create our own classroom patter song with the Green Eggs and Ham text. 4. Following the demonstration, the students and teacher will repeat the lines together in step a few times, increasing tempo each time. This will be used as the chorus for the class song. 5. Then the teacher will split the students into pre-determined groups and give them a paper with a few lines from the book.
Personalize: (Make the learning personal to the student. Provide
opportunities for creativity and for students to be musicians. Encourage creativity and innovation.)

In what ways can improvisatory skills be used to facilitate music literacy and an understanding of basic musical concepts?
Assessment: Formative-

Monitor the students ability to maintain a steady tempo and work together in groups
Summative- Evaluate the final product as a

creative, improvisatory work

6. Together, the students will create their own intricate, fastpaced rhythm for the text they have been given. 7. Each student will choose an instrument from the classroom to play while reciting their lines. This instrument will keep a steady beat using quarter or eighth notes as discussed in the previous class. 8. Each of the groups will rehearse and take turns performing their lines for the class. 9. Now the class will come together for the full song, synthesizing the groups verses with the previously established chorus.
Perform: (Communicate and share the new learning through performance,
demonstration or exhibition.)

Materials: Camera

to record video, classroom instruments, handouts with Green Eggs and Ham lyrics

The teacher will record the final product. The video will be shown on the TV during the morning announcements and uploaded onto the classrooms YouTube site for family and friends to view.

Process: (After the lesson, take time to reflect.) Take time to reflect on whether or not the students reached the intended

objectives. Were the students able to keep a steady, controlled rhythm and use improvisation to create a verse for a patter song?
